Quick question, does anyone foresee any issues with using two stations(one PC, one Mac) to read off one network drive to access both image files and catalog files? I wouldn't ever use the two computers at the same time, but do you think that if I have each instance of LR pulling info from the same catalog, it would update seamlessly at both the PC and the Mac?

Adobe highly recommends against it. Specifically, don't access the catalog file on a network share.

For more info, read this, from Forum Guru Denis Pagé.

Also be aware that keeping the image files on a network drive increases corruption rates (not just for LR), so make sure you've got backups as standard.

any foresee-able problems(other than annoyance) in running the same setup with an external drive, going from one station to another?

No, not really. I worked that way for quite a while, although I tend to live on my desktop these days. Only issue you'll find is that external drives can be a little slower than internal desktop drives (although sometimes faster than internal laptop drives), but unless you're working all day every day, it's probably a reasonable trade-off.
