I am currently looking at the concept of uploading web galleries. When feeling a novice...ask the Forum! :icon_mrgreen: I appreciate that this might be considered a plug in question, so hope that posting into general is acceptable.

The reason for posting here is that from what I have seen on the various Lightroom videos is that to use FTP, it would seem that I don't need SmartFTP/Filezilla or others that I have seen/read about.

Is this a correct assumption?

As ever, thanks in advance, and apologies moderators, if I should have located the post elsewhere.

Chris

You are correct. Lightroom can upload galleries directly to the web without having to rely on a third-party FTP program. More substantial work like linking independent galleries to one another or adding non-gallery webpages might require it.

Chris, bear in mind that Lr's built-in FTP has frequently been reported to be 'less-robust' :) than the stand alone products you mentioned. You may be quite successful, but should you have difficulties, it may be a problematic interaction between Lr's FTP and your chosen webhost. In that case, you might want to try one of the other clients. I've always been happy with FileZilla, but there are numerous others.

After initial troubles, the host support has kindly pointed me to the appropriate part of the server to upload the galleries.
However, when I have done this, I have put in the full path of the location into the box.
I have also added a subfolder to try to keep things neat and manageable.
Has this been a mistake, as when I come to try to insert the gallery onto a page, via Insert media object, the gallery still is not showing? :(

Hard to say, can you say what web host? Or give us a link to the work in progress? Typically what would happen, is that you would upload the gallery, including its main page and resource folders to a website subfolder. You'd then establish a link to the gallery page by placing a hyperlink on your existing web page. I could be misunderstanding, but when you say 'Insert Media Object', it may be that your web service is expecting something different from the gallery Lr is providing.

Thanks for trying to understand.
PArt of my problem is that I am a total novice at this and do need lots of hand holding. However, the hosting service support tends, in my view at the moment to expect a baseline knowledge, and when you are as I describe, it can be difficult to explain in very simple teerms, what they probably ahve as fingertip knowledge.
Having put some pictures up, pasting them into a table was the starting point, but they are all very static and the galleries seemed to be the way froward, partcularly with the Lightroom FTP possibility.
I can locate the folders in public_html, but the Insert media object came from reading a website on the net about how to use FTP. Clearly this has been an an erroneous approach. I will try the hyperlink idea next.
I hope you don't mind, but since I am struggling, I would not wish to identify the hosting service here, as I am quite sure they are trying their best to help. However, I will let you know the host by PM.

(Spelling edit)

Don't worry Chris, we've all been beginners at some point. At least you have a friendly place to learn! ;)

Insert media object isn't an FTP term, so maybe a link to the page you were reading would help.

Are you trying to put a text link to a gallery, or put the whole gallery embedded into an existing page? If you're just trying to create an index to multiple different galleries, a text link is a good start, and you can always go from there.

Vic, I've replied in much the same vein via PM.

Chris, I'd say we all understand about hosting companies, and we won't take anything negative about them from your learning stages. If they're doing their best to help, we get it. We run into the same problem here at these forums, there's just a huge first step across a learning/knowledge gap of terminology and paradigm, and it can take several tries to leap it. Having looked at your site, I think it's a good start, and once we get this one little interface issue solved, you'll be good to go.

Just a brief update.

I have now been in contact with what I think is a very good support person, who seemed intent on helping and asked for a rank order list of what I hoped to achieve. I provided this, including what I was asked for in terms of details re Lightroom.

In response the next person directed me to learn all about Lightroom by providing a link... to Adobe Lightroom!!

I have asked for my reply to be forwarded to the support guy I though was going to help.

After much pondering following a comment from "helpful support", I think that the sitebuilding software, regardless of its ability or not to work with Lightroom, is ultimately, in terms of photos, less good than others so am awaiting a response as to whether or not they will support a different software.

I will keep you posted. Thanks for suggestions, which I have included in response to support.

I think if I am to change, now would be a better time before I do much more to the site.

It is in its infancy!!

Best wishes

Well, it now appears that advice is not to be forthcoming and if I wasn't pig headed (!)I could quite happily abort the vain attempt.
I think it is obvious that I am only just getting my head round certain issues. The FTP process for example I think is now clearer and I have created a folder for galleries as well as picture and have successfully transferred both LR galleries and images.
Where things break down is how to get the images to the page. In the WYSIWYG editor is where I find the "Insert media" icon, but when I get to the folder the LR galleries doen't show up.
My problem is thus how do I insert the gallery on the page in this circumstance. I feel that it should be achievable and in my mind think that the use of html would probably be very helpful, but in the absence of html knowledge I am struggling.
The software that the host has provided is RVSitebuilder. I decided on it as I thought the features as described would give it a longevity after the learning curve. However I feel that ultimately it is a basic package, which will result in a bland site. I am quite sure that I could extend it fairly quickly, but I am reluctant to do this, as I feel I would find it quite limiting in a short space of time, although I am sure there must be more to the software than I am giving it credit.
Back to work next week, so I will have much less time to go round in circles...probably a good thing!

My guess is the editor is expecting to see a media file for insertion, like a jpeg or doc. You are trying to insert a gallery which is a mini website in it's own right. You need to insert a link to the gallery index file instead.

Example:

You export a gallery from LR called landscape and it saves in a folder called landscape. You have to create a link in your website to landscape/index.html.

Most web editing software packages have options to link to external pages or to embed an external page, these options should achieve what you want.

As for complexity and html code, take a look at my website, simple and clean and I haven't had to write a single line of html code. A basic package doesn't have to mean a bland website, keep it simple and clean, there a far too many sites out there that are over-complicated and look a real mess. Never forget what you are trying to achieve with your site and try to get flashy for the sake of it.

one more tip... if possible build as much of the website in a single folder on you machine and test it, then up load its contents to the hosting provider in one go using a good FTP client. This will save you a load of time.

Bear in mind if you reference your own galleries using a URL that these won't work until you have uploaded them to the website.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I agree very much with the concept of not being too flash, and felt my original ideas were on those lines. The frustrations have set in when for reasons which are twofold, issues with the software and my lack of ability have prevented me from getting past first base.
Although my wife has been grumbling about the amount of time I have spent pondering the problems, I can see a late night ahead.
Thanks again!

Thanks to all who have helped so far. With the use of a hyperlink as noted, after much head scratching we are now at second base. :icon_lol:

If I could crave the skills of others again, what I have been able to do, is to add the hyperlink via an add hyperlink button (Samye Ling sub page in Scotland). However, the only drawback of this is that the gallery takes over the page. As Sizzling Badger noted, it is its own website and thus prevents direct access to the main site which means that using the back button to return to the site. Is there a way for the hyperlink to be altered to show the gallery within the main site view?

2 options...

1) make the link open in a new window if this is an option in your software.
2) make the link open in an iFrame (embeds the gallery in your page) if this is possible in your software. (this is what I do)

:) :) :)
One's mood is very much changed!! I have now been able to upload a few of the gallery styles onto test pages, found a few issues there, but they are issues that I feel I can look at and hopefully improve as time passes. One of the styles on the web didn't seem right, but it has been fantastic to see them displayed within the site.

I am absolutely delighted that after ten days of being bounced back and forward by the web host support, noting to them what Brad had said about hyperlinks, but being told it was not possible etc etc, I was really down. Sizzling Badger's input gave me the final pieces to get things moving. To both Brad and Sizzling Badger therefore, "thank you" is just woefully inadequate.

With every good wish,
Chris

glad we could help.. I'm no web expert it's just stuff I have found out myself over the last few months while trying to get my site working with LR galleries.

I checked out your website, the galleries look pretty good, I like the small flash galleries myself (simpleviewer) I think the integrate well using iFrames.

With another week haing passed, I have been adding more to the website and thoroughly enjoying myself.
Having got past the question of embedding a Lightroom gallery, including modifying the embed size to take into account any text on the page, the site is starting to come together with my only concern that I do have a day job.
The web modules are certainly easy to use, my only concern is the copyright image is too small. I am exporting images into a watermark software package before returning them into Lightroom. (I am afraid i just cannot fathom the Mogrify package, but like Pooh, I am a bear of little brain.)
What I need now is to buy a film scanner for the slides in the cupboard and then I fully expect to be assaulted by Mrs calaf!! :icon_mrgreen:

That's an interesting package SB. Thanks for the link.

If I were to start on scanning the load of material in the cupboards, Mrs calaf would definitely be unhappy at the time I would be spending not talking (ie listening! ::) ) to her. Initially the plan had been that this task would keep me occupied in a few years when I retire.
I have been looking at scanners thinking how much to spend, given that the scanner's life will be comparatively short term-until all the keepers are scanned. However, having looked at the cheaper scanners (eg Plustek), I seem to end up looking at more expensive (Nikon). This service certainly is worth further investigation.
All best
Chris

Without wishing to disrespect you in any way... I think they would probably make a better job of it too as they do it every day and scanning is a bit of a black art to be honest.
