Upgrading to a Larger Hard Drive (MAC)

I am sorry if this is an old question, but I couldn't find anything that applied using my search terms.

I'm using LR2 on an iMac and am trying to switch to a larger drive as my old drive is almost full.

I have transferred all the files from my main and backup drive onto the new larger drives.

This is where I get into problems trying to get Lightroom to recognize that all my files are still there, just on two new, larger drives.

Any help?

I'm sure its a simple solution, but my computer skills just are not that great.

cometboy, it's a simple solution. But it's one of those simple solutions that's much easier once you know how .

For your case, you can skip most of it, and home in on Option 1, step 4, and read the link embedded there. Actually, you could just read that embedded link, but I thought the whole article would help give you some added perspective on how the whole thing works.

If that doesn't get you where you want, check back.

Thank you for the reply. I tried the technique that you directed me to and it works in a limited way. When I relocate a "missing" image, it does re-link the one image and all the other images in that folder.

However, I have hundreds and hundreds of folders, it will take me days of effort to reconnect all my images this way.

I can't believe that I will have to go to all that effort just to upgrade to a larger drive.

One thought that occurred to me that I'm kind of hesitant to try is this :

When I transferred my old drive to the larger drive I named the new drive 2T Lightroom Photos. The old drive was called simply Lightroom Photos. If I rename the new 2T drive the same as the old drive, will Lightroom be "fooled" into thinking that the new drive is the same drive and find all my images automatically?

Most probably if you kept the same subfolder structure as before.

But keep in mind that you should think about reorganising with a top level folder hierarchy!...

Thanks for the information.

I will consider re-organizing my folders if I can get Lightroom to find all my images again.

That is my number one problem at this point.

I am not very good at organizing things on the two editing/cataloging programs that I have used so far.

I completely depend on Lightroom to do this.

Mistake? Probably.

But I get hives if I have to sit in front of a computer too long

Definitely prefer taking photos to developing/organizing them.
