Upgraded to Lightroom 2.2, not working correctly.

Man oh man, I keep getting the bar at the top of the screen turning blue and (Develop Not Responding) and also (Library Not Responding) with the hour glass showing.

Let me add a little more info here. While occuring during (Develop Not Responding), is after I have made several brush adjustments. Then things start really going hay-wire. Or, even when zooming in and out. Develop and Library.

What the heck.

And now its even locking up on me.

For sure had not been doing this before the upgrade.

Not a happy camper.

I checked Adobe site and looks like a few others are getting this.

Running Windows XP, SP2, 2 gig ram, 2.4ghz P4.

Geoff posted to me at NikonCafe and suggested I bring up the subject here.

On a good note, the masking brush response has improved.

Thank you Victoria, I will check into that. I did a couple of things there before I saw your post.

The thing is, it was fine before the update. Unless the update corrupted something.

Anyway, still working on it.

I have the same platform as you but are using the latest servicepack SP3. Not sure if this helps but since the upgrade works fine for me I thought I should let you know.

Victoria, thanks for direction to this. I deleted my preferences file and restarted, and gained a lot more quickness in things. A whole lots better.

We'll put it through its paces now.

2.2 HUGE memory Leak

I never had a problem with 2.1 or any version for that matter. Installed 2.2 and within 5 - 8 brush strokes lightroom goes from around 612k to 1.5 gig memory usage and takes my system right down to a crawl, it's horrible. I am a professional photographer and this has killed me. After spending hours trying to trouble shoot this problem I am forced to try to down grade back to 2.1 in order to continue working. I hope they patch this fast.

Welcome, your problem is not the norm so there may be something else happening.
Can you take a moment to fill in your signature to help us to help you.
You may find that deleting your preferences may help as mentioned in this thread though.

I did all of that, deleted preferences, started new catalog, uninstalled wacom tablet, optimized current catalog...nothing. After some more experimenting I have discovered it is not just brush strokes, I open lightroom and the memory consumption just continually grows until the system become unresponsive.

Vista Ultimate x64 sp1
AMD 32''+
ATI 2''M
2 gig Ram
25' gig HDD

Lightroom on C, catalog on D (partitioned drive). Over 1'','' picture in catalog. NO ISSUES under 2.1 only started after upgrading to 2.2. I did not change anything. 1.4 through 2.1 functioned perfectly, pretty sure it's not my hardware (unless it broke in 1' minutes time) I finished one set of Senior portraits with no issues under 2.1 upgraded to 2.2 and everything fell apart within 1' minutes...very frustrating.

Are you having the same problems with x64 and x32??

Never though to install x32 version. I did so and memory leak gone! runs much slower, almost chunky...but mem usage stays under 6''k. Thanks for the idea and what should have been an obvious experiment.

mbjr, there seem to be a few people having the same problem with the 2.2 update, although a comparitively small percentage of users - hopefully they'll be able to figure out what's going wrong before too long, but at least it's not just you!

Problem is still there just takes longer to manifest itself in x32 version. I absolutely cannot export images in either version kills system within seconds. This is terrible. I hope there's a patch soon.

There is a memory leak in both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Lr for Windows. My guess is that, because you have only 2GB of RAM, it stops your system sooner than others. I have 8GB of RAM on my Vista Home Premium 64 bit system and, although I have seen physical RAM usage as high as 4.9GB for Lr 2.2, the program remains responsive and stable.

Vista being already memory hungry and short with 2GB RAM... This is plausible. The more reports, the more we can pinpoint. :?

I have heard the term memory leak a lot, have not researched it, and have not monitored it, don't know how for one. Could you explain exactly what it is doing and how to monitor it?

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose "Task Manager". Different tabs will give you some info...

Or right click on the task bar and choose "Task Manager" and open the Performance Tab. Then watch the Physical Memory usage and Page File. "Memory leaks" occur when a program can't release unneed memory and the program can't access enough memory to keep on working. I won't go any further than that because I tend to confuse myself about it.

Thank you for the reply. I have done that before and watched it, but I did not know what I was watching.

So if understand correctly, a program uses the memory, does not release it, access more, and if runs out due to this, possibly locks up?

Yes, that's correct.

Lr has particular problems with Windows, in that, for its matrix mathematics, it much prefers contiguous memory, and Windows apparently offers no provision for the allocation/reservation of contiguous memory.
