Upgraded to 1.4.1 - Canon cameras do not download photos

I just recently upgraded from Lightroom 1.' to 1.4.1 and now I can not do either of the following: 1. "enable auto import" and 2. I am unable to download photos from any of my Canon cameras (Rebel, Powershot and 4'D) either by Lightroom or Canon Utility or Camera Wizard. Anyone with any suggestions? Cameras do download to my wife's laptop that does not have LR installed

Hi Geojan, welcome to the forum!

Can you import files from your hard drive? Are you trying to import from a card reader or direct from the camera?

I can import from hard drive and I am using direct USB from the cameras. I re-installed Lightroom 1.1 and tried to re-install my camera drivers but they were all inplace. Still no luck. I plug the camera into the computer, the S2-IS comes on, but no download. I plug in the Rebel, turn it on and nothing happens. I have not yet tried my 4'D.

At the moment this is sounding like a Windows issue rather than directly Lightroom, so we just need to trace it back.

Does the camera show up as a drive, if you go to the import dialog or check in Windows Explorer?

And is the camera set to the right settings - I can't remember off the top of my head - PTP or Mass Connection or PC Connection - something along those lines. Try both settings and see what happens.

You said it still works on your wife's computer? With the same cable or a different cable?

None of my 3 Canon's show up as a drive. And all my cameras worked prior so I do not think it is a setting. One did work on my wife's computer with the same cable as on mine. BUT I think you are on the right track with Windows. I have also installed Explorer 8 at about the same time as I upgraded Lightroom. Could that have changed any settings in Windows that would affect my camera uploads? Do you have any suggestions? Or could the upgrade change Windows?

I can not tell you how much I appreciate your help! George

Bingo, ok, if the OS system can't see the cameras, then Lightroom can't either. Just try the other setting to humour me. ;) Then, it's years since I've been Windows based, but I'd probably try the Canon website for updated software and drivers next.

OK, Victoria!! But, to be honest, I am not much of a computer guru when it comes to settings. Photography is what I concentrate on! So where would I find the settings on PC Connection because I think that is what was set up initially? I have reloaded the drivers for the 3 cameras from the provided discs. It's so strange that my camers quit uploadiing right after I upgraded Lightroom and downloaded Explorer 8.

I agree with Victoria in that it sounds reminiscent of PTP not being set in the camera. I took a quick look online and it would appear that for the Rebel at least you can change this in "Set Up 2->Communication->PTP". I would try both PTP and Normal which are the available options. Power off the camera, connect to the PC and then power it back on and see if Windows Explorer assigns it a drive letter.

Found that setting in the Rebel but not in the 4'D or 2S-IS. It was set on "PC Connection". I changed to PTP and connected. The camera was flashing "busy" but was not registering as a drive. I changed back to "PC Connection" and nothing happened. Could downloading Explorer have changed some settings? I wouldn't suspect so but who knows?

Any other Windows updates at the same time as the Explorer update? It's quite possible. PC Connection does sound like the right one, from memory. Did you find any driver updates on the Canon website?

Hi, Victoria and LJR:

Well, case solved. About the time that I updated Lightroom and Explorer 8, apparently a USB Controller input gave up the ghost. I checked with a friend of mine and he suggested trying a different USB device in the ones I was using. It didn't work so I moved the Controller to another port in the back and my four up-front ports now work, along with my cameras!!

You guys have been GREAT! I sincerely appreciate all your support! Perhaps we will meet again.
