Hi everyone... my first post so hoping someone can help.

I've just upgraded to LR2 after using 1 and later versions for some time. I'm getting what look like a number of different issues, including the strange 'corrupted image' you can see in the attached picture (usually it's permanent, sometimes it just goes away) which happens when I move from Library to Develop, but then starts to show up on Library too. Only solution is to reload the files from backups, but sooner or later the corruption starts again.

Secondly, I'm having problems printing to my Epson Pro 38'' - the images come out too dark (no obvious colour cast). I get that problem with both CS3 and LR2 with colour management from the application not the printer (have tried the suiggestion of setting the printer colour management up as per one of the threads here, but that doesn't seem to work).

Is this a weird one, or have you all sorted this out a long time ago and I'm just doing something daft?

Thanks!

Hi Jeremy, welcome to the forum!

Did you manage to get it sorted out?

That certainly looks like image corruption, but it would be interesting to know where the corruption is occurring. When you look at the files in another raw processor, do you see the same corruption?

Hi Victoria

Thanks for the welcome! Those changes seems to have helped in that, whilst I'm still getting the corruptions, they don't seem to be permanent any more (ie I lose an image but a few minutes later or when I next start LR the corruption goes away and the image reappears). I had an auto update to Adobe camera RAW today so don't know if that's helping too... the images load with no issues in CS3 so it seems it's maybe only the LR preview that's corrupted (although I don't know why I don't then see the image without corruption on the main editing screen?).

Oops. Spoke too soon. The corruption is spreading across more of the pictures I've loaded into LR and also showing up in CS3. Plus it's no longer reverting after a period, and LR performance seems to be very poor (very slow responses and regular locking up).

I don't have another RAW converter loaded - will try that later I think. Any help greatly appreciated though... am seriously thinking about uninstalling LR2.

Thanks, Jeremy

Imported File Corruption in Lightroom 2

With every import from a CF card (any CF card from any camera) into Lightroom 2, I get a number of corrupt files (or thumbnails). By accident, I discovered that if I Delete From Disk the corrupt files (there are often many) and re-import all files from the original CF card, most of the corrupt files are no longer corrupt on the second go-around. I have had to do this up to four times to un-corrupt all files, but eventually everything gets cleaned up.

The corruption appears as color boxes with color striations and plain white boxes covering a portion of the picture. This occurs with different cameras and different CF cards, whether I download from the camera directly via USB cable or from the card reader built into my PC.

If I open the files directly into Photoshop CS3 (without importing into Lightroom 2), no corruption. If I select Edit in Photoshop from within Lightroom 2 after importing into Lightroom 2, Photoshop then opens the corrupt file as a corrupt file.

The workaround is time-consuming. Please advise.

I posted a new thread on a similar issue in LR2 and am seeing many other complaints of this problem appearing here and elsewhere.

LR, especially LR2, has become essential to my business. Someone please assure me that Adobe is working this problem.

Thank you.

Chuck

The reason Lightroom appears to be corrupting the photos is that it initially reads the embedded preview, which is in an uncorrupted part of the file, and then reads the raw data which it can't read fully as it's corrupted.

I'm certainly not discounting Lightroom as causing the corruption, although as it doesn't write back to the originals, it's usually pretty low down the list of possibilities.

Things to check:

Do you have backups of these files elsewhere? Duplicate them, and open at them in ACR in CS3 before loading them into Lightroom, to check whether they are already corrupted before hitting LR.

I'd also be looking in other places - card reader or cable is most often the cause of corruption. A hard drive on it's way out is also very likely. Dodgy RAM is also a possibility. Whatever you do, backup, backup, backup at this point.

I've merged the 2 current corruption threads, otherwise we'll just end up repeating ourselves. :)

Another thought, while we're here.

If the preview is corrupted in Library module, try switching to Develop module. That reads the raw data again, and will show whether the raw file itself is corrupted.

Thanks Victoria. What seems clear is that the RAW files aren't corrupted, even though I see the same corruption in both LR and CS3 sometimes. If I delete the LR catalog and start again, importing the same RAW files from hard disk (ie not from a copy or a card) the corruption is not there initially and only starts to creep in as I try to get something done.

(Btw I have an NVIDIA graphics card so have made the suggested changes to 3D setting too. Performance may be slightly improved, but still seeing the corruption.)

Where are the files stored Jeremy? Adobe did unofficially admit to some issues with network drives, both on CS3 and LR. If you can, I'd try putting files on a different hard drive and trying them there for a while. I'm still inclined to think hard drive or RAM at the moment.

Files are on a local hard drive. My first thought was a problem with the drive so I replaced it, plus I tried using a different local drive - had the same issues with both.

I would try swapping out the RAM or at least running a detailed memory test then. It's worth covering all the bases.

Any way to refresh/reload previews?

Victoria - I'm suffering from the same corruption problem which has only just started. Previously I have thousands of previews on my remote server with no issues. THe image can be viewed fine in Development. Any way to refresh/reload the preview images in library mode? Thanks Harnser

Hi harnser, welcome to the forum!

If the images show ok in Develop, then it sounds like they're ok.

To refresh the previews, you could look at each photo in Develop, but that's a bit time consuming. You could also delete/rename the *.lrdata file which you'll find in the same folder as your *.lrcat catalog file. That will delete all of the previews. Then I'd select the photos in Grid view and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews and leave it running probably overnight rebuilding fresh previews.

Hi Harnser, in addition to Victoria's comments, welcome from me too.
To help us help you could you please take a moment to fill in your signature with information similar to what I have, in the "userCP' that is found at the top left of the page - thanks.
The system info, LR version are very relevant.

Thanks Victoria - Quick test was to rename *.lrdata and yes it forced it to render new previews but almost all were corrupted. You can still view in Develop. Curious, I do not have much time to experiment this week but wil try again this weekend. Thanks

Very curious harnser. Next test, I'd try exporting some of the files to check that the originals definitely aren't corrupted.

Hi folks, new here because of this very issue. 2'-4'% of my imports into lightroom 2.1 (and 2.' before that...) have "unexpected end-of-file" corruption. I've tried everything mentioned here, tried two different cameras, 6 different CF cards. I need to do a mem test. If anyone knows a good program to test with that would be great. This is pretty frustrating. I love lightroom and want to make it work... I'll do a better introduction later. Thanks, Tony

Tony, Welcome, sorry you're having problems. I'm hopeful the folks here can help you get sorted out. Thanks for the info-filled sig, that's usually a good starting place.

Tony, do you have any other software on your system which will read full raw files (not just the previews)? I'd try looking at the file in that before loading into LR, to check where along the line it's likely getting corrupted. How are you uploading - card reader or cable?

I just replaced my ram and that wasn't it. I just tested my D3'' on a friends mac/lightroom2 setup and the files imported fine with no reported errors. I've got an extreme IV firewire reader coming in, so I'll try that.
