Umlaut in filenames. Catalog won't find images anymore

Just upgraded to LR2 and a folder named "Göteborg" (a city in Sweden), which contains images with that same name, got corrupted (?) during the catalog conversion. When LR2 says that files are missing (which is correct) then it shows something like "... Go"teborg''1.jpg is offline or missing". When I point LR2 to the directory where the files are, they still don't show in LR2, because the file name is obviously different, with ö, not o"

Is there a way to fix the references in the catalog?

Hi Andy, welcome to the forum! Sorry it's a problem that brings you here.

So is it just this one folder that is showing this problem? How many pictures are we talking about? There's a couple of options, but I'd really like to point you in the direction of the easiest if I can!

FYI, This is also an issue when importing Keyword lists. Many place names contain Umlauts (German, Scandinavian, etc) and many other languages contain accentuated characters, particularly 'e' and 'n'. These do not import correctly as keywords and will cause a keyword list to bomb part-way through import. I would have thought your missing file issue to be OS originally but now I am thinking that Lightroom isn't currently recognizing the accentuated characters.

If a text editor can handle the character, and the OS recognizes it as valid, Lightroom should allow it as a file name or in metadata.

Sorry I don't have a solution for you other than to ask if when you upgraded to LR 2.' you came from Ver 1.x or another program? If 1.x, it should still be on your machine. You might consider doing a rename on a single offending file as a test in Ver 1.1 and see if the problem corrects in Ver 2. Backup your test file prior to doing so.

If the Catalog is showing Go"teborg, then outside of LR change the file name from Göteborg to Go"teborg and see if that corrects your problem for that file. I had a naming error on some files before I imported theminto LR. They were named filename..jpg (Note the two "." Lightroom only read one of the '.' By renaming the file outside of LR to remove the extra '.' Lightroom had no difficulty finding the file it cataloged. If my suggestion solves your problem, you might need to do something similar.

While in LR, I renamed one of my files Göteborg.jpg. Lightroom permitted this and it shows up in my metadata just fine. It also shows up in Windows Explorer with the umlat (ö) in the file name. I don't think the problem is LR or Vista. I note that you are running XP.
The description of your problem used o" to represent ö This is usually a word processing convention to represent characters not found on a US keyboard. What Keyboard are you using? Does your keyboard have a ö key or do you have to enter a key combination o" to represent ö?
