two images of some photos

on several photos i imported into lightroom 2 i have two images--how does this happen and if i attempt to delete one of them will both disappear--is there any way to prevent getting two images--thank you (i could experiment and see what happens but then i would have to go back and find which image i have to reimport and that would be very time consuming)

jday, we'll have to know more. What are the filetypes, and filenames? I assume you're seeing these in Grid View. Are there any icons, or badges showing on the images, particularly, a number?

At an educated guess, I'd suspect that you've accidentally created Virtual Copies, but hard to tell without more info. Any chance of a screen shot of a pair of the duplicates in Grid view?
