Warning. This tip is not very earth shattering but even as a long time LR user I only discovered this the other day by accident. In situations when I use the graduated filter and highlight brush to adjust exposure to recover locally blown highlights or recover pure black I usually just hover the mouse pointer over the little triangles in the top left and top right hand corner of the histogram box to see which areas are blown / black. I then applied the adjustments and then hovered again to check whether I recovered all the blown highlights and blacks and if necessary went back to apply some more. Now I know this may sound pretty obvious to many experienced users but purely by chance the other day I clicked on those little triangles to turn them on so that the reds (blown highlights) and blues (pure blacks) were constantly showing. I then applied the adjustments and to my delight as I applied the adjustments the reds and blues gradually disappeared as the exposure was adjusted. This not only saved time by getting it right first time but ensured that I did not apply more adjustment than necessary.
