trying to find a reason to use LR in my workflow

At this point, I use BreezeBrowser Pro to quickly look through my pictures, deleting the bad ones, etc.
If I see a picture I want to keep, but that needs work, cropping, etc. I use Canon DPP.
I've tried to use LR 2, but it's so slow going from picture to picture

When I use LR, it is slug slow to go from preview to preview. I can do it much faster browsing in BBPro, finding a picture I need to modify, then opening DPP and modding it. I can probably do those 2 programs by the time LR opens up the preview.
Is it the way I'm importing it? I import it just using the default,"add photos to catalog w/out moving"

Joe, try rendering standard previews for a folder and see how that improves speed. Select a folder/select all/library menu/previews/render standard previews.
By choosing the embedded preview LR has to generate one on the fly so as any changes can be displayed. This is a major cause of slowness!

Remember, you are also comparng a browswer program with a cataloging program. At heart, LR is a database (and a RAW converter). BB Pro is only a browser program, and like Photo Mechanic, can be optimized for speed when viewing images. Yes, there are other factors for consideration, but remember that BB Pro cannot preform database (or extensive RAW conversion) functions like LR.

You're right in that BB Pro is a browsing program. What I do, that's quickest for me is browse the pictures in BB Pro, if I come across one I need to work on, then I use Canon Digital Photo Professional, since I don't have the long Import that do with LR.

Is there a way to just browse to a folder, click on the folder, then have the pictures appear like in Digital Photo Professional?
I like the extensive RAW tools in LR, but I like the much quicker workflow of DPP.

You can browse a folder in the Library module, select an image, and then work on it in the Develop module. Its not lightning fast, but it is reasonable if your are not counting the seconds. But, if you are not using the database-oriented features of LR then, given your desire for speed, LR is probably carrying "too much program" for your needs.

Maybe when wou will get tens of thousands of photos on you computer you will think back about this thread... :roll:
