Trouble keywording multiple files in "grid"

hi! not sure what to search for on this; been looking for about an hour.

My keywording checkboxes used to show a greyed-out checkbox when *some* of the selected photos (in grid) had that keyword, and I could check the box to apply to all, and check again to apply none. However, now, I'm unable to apply a keyword to all selected photos with a click; it only applies the keyword to the "active" photo.
This happened after I mistakenly typed a long string of letters, thinking I was creating a new keyword, but was actually hitting a dozen hotkeys in a row, and now I'm not sure which key changed things.
Any ideas would be grand...

Welcome to the forum!

You may have some images 'hidden' or 'protected' by virtue of their being in a collapsed stack. Right click on an image in Library-Grid and select Stacks>Expand all stacks and try again.

Please report back and let us know what happened.

Your Profile reads that you are running LR version 1.'. Is this correct?

Rickk's suggestion is most likely if you pressed keys around.

But in case this not a collapsed stacks problem, look at Menu -> Metadata -> Show Metadata for Target Photo Only. Revove check mark if there is one. But there are no keypresses associated with this one so my comment will most likely be of use for those having a "similar" problem in a different situation.

Photos are definitely not in a stack. This problem persists with any two photos selected (and indeed, there are no stacks in this particular catalog.

Hmm. nope. I didn't notice that dropdown. it's updated now.

I'll try this when I get home; it sounds pretty close to the issue. Maybe I enabled something by accident. who knows. ;)

Nnnnope. All this does is not display "<mixed>" in the metadata pane, but the keywording frame still behaves the same.
perhaps I should reinstall. this is really frustrating. ;)

Nope. While I've used a secondary monitor in the past, this problem manifests on the primary monitor, with nothing on the secondary.

Ok. I can duplicate this issue by doing the following:

Create Keyword ABC with a synonym of XYZ
Create Keyword XYZ with a synonym of ABC
Drag Keyword XYZ into ABC

Out of six images, set 3 Images to ABC, set the other 3 images to XYZ. Select one of each image.
Parent Keyword ABC cannot be unselected. It can be applied by check to all or to check the active but cannot be set to none.

Is it possible you have a circular synonym reference in a nested keyword hierarchy?

Admittedly this is a stretch but it is the only solution I have found that comes close to mimicking your issue. Any chance?

Ok, so look up a little further and tell us what it says in the keywording panel instead. That might provide a clue.
