Tone Curve display sliders

How can I make use of the three triangular sliders docked at the base of the Tone Curve display.. They resemble the sliders in a Levels Adjustment but certainly don't seem to have the same result when moved.

They adjust how large of an area is affected by each of the sliders for Shadows, Darks, Lights and Highlights. However much of the histogram is between the marks, that's how much will get pushed by that slider.
