Titles & captions not saving correctly

Why can't I see both title and caption meteadata in the file on the hard drive? In Lightroom if I add a title and then go into the actual file in Explorer on the hard drive (right click file, properties, details) I can see the LR title in the "Title" field. But if in LR I enter just a caption (no title), then in the file on the hard drive I see the LR caption info in the "title" field (I expected to see caption info in the "comments" field on the hard drive). Finally, if in LR I add both a title and a caption, the only thing that shows up on the hard drive is the Title. The LR caption info is NOT visble anywhere.

Several weeks ago when I was first learning about titles and captions I think I saw the caption info in the file (if I recall correctly), but now the caption info does not appear to be saving to file. I have "automatically write changes into XMP" checked under Catalog settings/metadata and have also tried manually saving metedata (cntrl+S). So any ideas why I can't see both title and caption meteadata in the file on the hard drive?

Titles and captions are save in the IPTC section of the header. In lightroom you can not write to a proprietary RAW image file (just DNGs or JPGs & TIFs) In catalog preferences on the {Metadata} tab you need to check the box labeled "Automatically write changes to XMP" for changes to be written explicitly to a file. If your source file is a Proprietary RAW file, the changes will be written to a sidecar XMP file of the same name but with an XMP extension.

What application are you using to read the header for these image files?

Joe, welcome to the forums.

If you mean making those properties visible in Windows Explorer extended file properties, then that's a problem with how Windows itself interacts with files of different types. Lr is writing that data in the expected locations. Windows Explorer/NTFS doesn't always see it the same way.

I'll try to reply to the two responses I see so far. My source file is a jpeg file. I do have "automatically write changes to XMP" checked. I am trying to read the information in Windows Vista by using Explorer, navigating to the file, then right clicking the file, then properties, then detail tab. On the detail tab I see a section called "Description"; I assume that is what you mean by "header"? In that section I see fields for Title, Subject, Rating, Tags, & Comments. Title is populated with the Title I entered in Lr. But I don't see the Caption info. I thought I'd seen the Caption info in "Comments" several weeks ago, but not sure if I recall that correctly now.

[/quote]In the Properties dialog, the LR Caption shows up in the Subject field just below the Title. I have no problem reading this description information in JPEGs on my Win7 machine and don't recall any problems when I was running Vista.

You might want to investigate the use of EXIFtool and its GUI complement EXIFtoolGUI.exe. It will decode everything in the image file header for most image formats.
