Library module title and caption metadata field doesn't save

Lightroom classic, in library mode I enter information in the "title" and "Caption fields" but when I go back later the fields are blank this seems to happen on and off
 
Solution
If the icon in the upper-left corner of the Metadata panel is rectangular:

that means you're in Edit Only mode. Click it to switch to View And Edit mode, and it will change to a hieroglyphic eyeball. It's a weird feature that confuses unsuspecting victims.
