Just writing in with a nasty gotcha for those that frequently hop timezones (at least on a mac). Lightroom 2.' apparently considers any change to the modification date of a file to indicate that the preview must be re-built. If you use an MS-DOS formatted external drive to store your Lightroom photos, and you change your computer to a new timezone, all of your previews will be "automagically" invalidated.
I learned this the hard way after carrying 3'K+ 1:1 previews from Nairobi to Boston last week.
My guess is that if you use a regular MacOS formatted drive, you won't run into this problem. However my policy when traveling is to use MS-DOS formatted drives since that will give the greatest likelihood of safe data recovery and storage continuity if my laptop dies mid-trip and I have to borrow a PC.
