time for presets

I notice that sometimes presets seem to whisk through a folder of images and atothers they take a good second on each image

I just reset a folder of about 65' pics and then applied a preset to the lot
Reseting took at least a second for every pic and then the presest I applied after seemed to be going at the same rate except for occasionally it would do abouta dozen in a second continuing for three dozen before slowing down again

any ideas why this difference in the speed of applying prests occurs?

It probably depends on the contents of the preset. As an example, if a preset only includes effects that are rendered in the 1:1 pipeline (noise reduction, sharpening, etc.) then applying them should be quick, as it won't cause previews to be re-rendered.

I'm sure some sliders are more expensive than others in terms of the calculations required. For example, I'd guess that Fill Light is a pretty expensive one, since a mask must be generated.

How do you judge if an image is completed or not? By looking at the three dots dissappearing or the thumbnails being updated? Lightroom is somehow processing in parallel rather sequentially. Thus, it can give priority to what you are working on/viewing. Were you scrolling forth and back in the list of 65'? Doing so can lead Lightroom going here and there trying to catch you.

I discovered this behavior by doing many images at once frequently on an older computer. This gave me time to see Lightroom trying to follow me.

I do not think that speed varies. It can be busy rendering new thumbnails then decide it is time to update the ... for the X last ones done etc.

My guess it that looking at processor usage will give a better idea if there is any processing variation. There are also backgroung process outside Lightroom that can momentarily ask for some processing time...
