Someone stole my hard drive in my bag with the pictures I use with Lightroom. I have a clean backup of my original until November last year : the folder is similar of the folder I use in LR. But for the rest, I have a back up of the original pictures in my mac, but I think it's bit messy, because after that I deleted and move some picture in LR, and I didn't sync the back up folder. The folder is just a back up when I imported my picture in LR for the first time. So, I'm afraid LR won't find all the pictures. I don't really know how to explain better. But I will apreciate some help before started, and I don't want to mess it up. What can I do to find my LR back?

Oh boubouoz, so sorry to hear that!

So would you have renamed the files between the versions you have on your backup and the versions that would have been in LR? And if so, what kind of naming structure would you have used?

yes, it's pretty sad. I was travelling from New Zealand to Paris, and the staff from one airport stole everything in my check in luggage, my Gitzo tripod, new Canon flash, and a lot of stuff. Now I have to find a solution to take everything with me in hand luggage, but it's too heavy, and most of the time, the airport securiy doesn't allow tripod in hand luggage!!!

Erm, ok, where do we start....

At first look, you have a BIG job on your hands.

yes, I think for a few of them. I always use the same strucrutre : date_title_number.jpg
like '1'9_Flower_''1.jpg

Would you have renamed before or after deleting images? And the backup images still have their original filenames? And there are more backup images than LR's expecting, right?

First, I'd DUPLICATE your backup images somewhere on your computer, to become your 'working' images. Then duplicate your backup catalog too, so that we have a working one.

Then, it's tough to say without seeing your catalog. It's going to be a big relinking job, but I'm wondering if there's some shortcuts you can take. Do you fancy zipping up your catalog and dropping it on my server? http://vbftp.net - username webupload, password 123

Thanks for your help,
I already started working on it, and I'm pretty happy. The first part was easy, I just connected my back up hard drive with my original pictures, to my computer, and locate the missing files. With the latest pictures, it's a mess if I remaned the pictures, so I have to locate them one by one. But fortunately, I didn't rename the pictures to much, so I have a couple of folders to work on it, but less than I tought.
Thanks.
Since now I will sync my folder very often, and have two back up hard drive at different location!!!!

That's good news boubouoz. For future reference, the import backup is great as a temporary backup while things get into your proper backup system, but a decent backup of your proper folder structure is priceless.

Maybe I should sync the original back up with the LR folder very often. Is there a quick way to do it? Because I travel a lot, and sometimes I don't go back to my back up hard drive location, in France, for a period up to 6 month!!!

I'd use file sync software - Chronosync is my favourite for Mac. Is it worth having a 2nd backup drive where you are the other 6 months, or are you travelling all that time?
