When you look at it in Grid view, does it have a little question mark in the corner? Most likely you've moved the file on disc without LR knowing where you've put it - click the question mark and show it where the file is now, and you should be sorted.

Thanks Victoria but it showed an exclamamtion mark, not a question mark! I've just removed the folder from LR, and deleted the files from the HD and am reimporting everything.

Try opening the file in Bridge or Photoshop, just in case it's corrupted. Sounds that way to me.

These are files from my new D3 and the only way I can open them is in Lightroom - I don't have CS3 and was hoping to avoid buying that! Previous shoots using this body have been fine.

Just now thought everything looked fine but then the exclamation mark of dread started to appear everywhere, even on previously unaffected files.

Hi Victoria

Thanks for the offer but I think I have found the cause of the problem - I suspect it might be the external drive I was downloading to.

Just on a whim, I did a download to my C drive, and a fresh import from there, and everything seemed fine. So I've now done a complete download of the job to another external drive, imported to a fresh ctalogue (was starting a new one for this year anyway) and, fingers crossed, have got a good clean import without any signs of corruption.

So, I can edit and preview but then I'll have to investigate that other drive.

By the way, just found out that you are just along the coast from me - I'm in Christchurch, Dorset - so greetings! And thanks for the help, Victoria.

Nice and local Jerry! That's my favourite bit of coast - I'm particularly partial to walking along the beaches down your way, particularly Highcliffe.
