To all,

I recently purchase a new 17" fully loaded MacBook Pro and have found that after a few successful attempts at processing images in Develop I now receive the message "The file could not be open". Our other computer in the office handles these same images just fine in LR. Is there some preference setting on the MacBook Pro that I'm not using? This might be and old topic but hoping some kind sole will point me the right direction.

Thanks in advance. Rob

Welcome to Lightroom Forums!

This means that the file is no longer in the location where Lightroom found it before. This could be because you moved the files outside of Lightroom to a different folder, or because they've been renamed, or because the drive name or drive letter has changed.

If your folders have a ? next to them in the Folders list, right-click on the top-level folder and choose "Find Missing Folder..." Navigate to the new location, and you're good to go. If it is just individual files, click on the ? above one of them in the Grid and do the same; LR will automatically find other files that have been moved in the same way.

If the files have been renamed it's slightly more complicated; let us know if that's the case and we'll walk you through it.

still not opening files

Hi,

Thanks so much for your suggestion. This is still a bit of a mystery. My new MacBook Pro was used for the first time with images produced from a photography campaign to Europe. The folders were imported via the LR "folders imported from disk" menu option and the names of the folders have not been altered. There are no question marks in the library mode. I simply started processing images by selecting an image in the library and then subsequently receiving the annoying "cannot open this file" message. I am aware of the lost files problem and by using the same approach you mentioned I have been successful at finding them. I am perplexed by this new problem. If you have any other suggestions I will be eternally grateful.

best,

Okay, sorry, I misunderstood. I thought the error message was the "missing or offline" one, but that's not what you said.

Using the Finder or Preview, can you open those files from your new Macbook Pro right now?

Rob, to help us help you could you please take a moment to fill in your signature in the "userCP' that is found in the nav-bar at the top left of the page - thanks.
What sort of files are they and where are they, maybe you could provide a screen shot of you library please......

Files, previews etc.

Kiwigeoff and Mark,

Thanks for your help. The files are all Canon Camera Raw shot on our Canon Mark II ds cameras.

I've been testing this out and the message I'm receiving when I open images in "develop" from "library" appears to be very erratic. Some images open others do not. Sometimes if I switch back and forth from develop to library and back again to develop it works and other times it doesn't. I also am noticing that even when the message "cannot open this file" does NOT appear and I'm happy, the cropping or spotting tools fail to work. I'm thinking about reinstalling LR or seeing if a more recent version of LR exists. I'm running 1.4 right now. I'm also suspicious that this might be a hardware problem since the same program works on our big Mac Pro.

I can see all of the images in LR library and can zoom in on them. The LR "develop" just does not work. All images in question are visible in Preview and will open in Photoshop. Please let me know what you think. Finally, I'm unclear about signing up for the "signature". Do I just type my name in again and save it?

Rob, how is the disk connected to the Macbook Pro? Is it over a network or locally connected? If it's connected over a network, is it possible to try connecting it directly just to see whether it makes any difference?

same file not opening either way

The mystery continues. I had tried this early on in the process to disconnect from the network. We have a network in the office I use for downloading images into our main server for archival purposes so I disconnected the network assuming that the delay in finding the files over the network might have caused LR to time out - or something. But all of the same file names and images are still on the laptop hard drive and still LR does not identify them. My next experiment will be to try and import these images into LR with new file names and see if this fixes the problem, unless you have a better thought. It's weird that sometimes LR "develop" works and then it does not. Very strange.

thanks,
