all of my folders on an external hard drive can be seen along with the thumbnails, when I select any file from any of the folders I get the message "the file could not be found". When I go into explorer the files are there. What do I need to do?

Solution
Allocate your photos drive a letter in the middle of the alphabet, such as P for Photos. Lots of YouTube vids on how to do that. Otherwise, plugging in a simple usb stick or a different drive will cause Windows to use a different letter when the Photos drive is blogged in.

Remember to do this also for your backup drive (eg Q), so that will work smoothly as well.
