Text edit area not showing

I am using PS 22.0.0 on Big Sur. When I brought up a PSD image with layers containing text. If I select a layer containing text, goto Text and place the cursor over the text and try to select it, nothing happens like it use to - the text area would be defined. Have I missed a setting?
