Takes forever to delete large number of raw files from Lightroom and Disk

Using Lightroom to delete large numbers of raw files from both Lightroom and Disk has always been slow... but today it is the worst ever... and it finally just stops responding... and either just sits there or gives me a big blank white window... and then after many many minutes ( what must have been 35 minutes to delete 3'' raw files) are the files finally deleted.

The files all had synched develop module corrections, and full metadata and I don't know if that makes a difference, but in any case, it seems that 7 (maybe longer) seconds per file is way too long... I don't recall ever having it take this long in the past...

I was wondering if others have seen this and if anyone has a suggestion in the workflow that could speed this up.

Question, are you running Microsoft Raw Viewer? It's an unsupported MS add-on, like the Power-Toys, that adds Raw viewing capability to Win Explorer and MS FAX and picture viewer?

There is a known bug with that add-on that can cause file delete problems.
I was going crazy with delete problems some-time ago, and removing this program solved them.

I don't think I've heard much about folks having delete troubles associated with LR though.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the reply.

I do have the Microsoft Raw Viewer installed. That is good to know I will look into it. I don't rely on it much anymore, but it is still nice to be able to see thumbs on the raw files when in windows file manager.

I just ran a test on 197 CR2s and it took 35 seconds to remove them. During that time, trying to do anything else within Lightroom is impossible as it does appear to stop responding in the Windows sense (screen won't redraw, title bar changes to Windows colours etc) with no other indication that it might be busy.

I have always thought that Lightroom's file deletion took an unreasonably long time to complete, even though it is removing previews and removing database data at the same time, but I don't think I've ever had it stop responding for the length of time you mention. However, I've learnt not to attempt to do _anything_ until the photos disappear from screen except put the kettle on.

Unfortunately I can't help but I am having similar problems so am very interested if anyone has a solution.

The problem is specifically when I use lightroom to delete files from disk rather than only remove them lightroom.

For example it took about 1' to 15mins to delete about 8' raw images last night. The problem is not isolated to raw images though -- it just took 8'secs to delete a test set of 12 small jpgs. I'd say it takes approximately 1'secs per image which seems too slow.

I have turned off zonealarm security suite just in case there is any interaction so can rule that out.

I also do not have microsoft raw viewer installed (as far as I know) so can probably rule that out.

My system spec is as in my signature and additionally I have around 3''' photos stored in the lightroom database.

In general I am a great fan of lightroom and recently have started to us it to manage all my photos (from previewing to printing) which is when I have noticed this problem.

Any advice from the community would be well received,

Since you are all running PCs and Brad has mentioned the Microsoft Raw Viewer I thought Id do a test on my Mac.
347 dng files - 6 secs. Yes to delete and not just remove.

and on the pc (still running Lr1.1) WIN XP sp2

352 cr2 files - 2 min 4's

Based on that I believe it may just be a windows OS thing. Sorry

I found my problem... deleting is quick now

My deletion problem is solved...
I just deleted another 3'' raws with absolutely no changes to my system. All I did was a system reboot and then opened only Lightroom before doing the deletions. This time it took only 89 seconds to delete 3'' images from both disk and Lightroom!

I hadn't done a reboot in several very busy days and had imported and gone through and added develop settings and such to some 15''+ images in that time. I was also bouncing back and forth in and out of Photoshop on about 4' different shots in that time... doing a lot of multilayer retouching and saving most as both unflattened PSDs and flattened tifs.... I created and uploaded about 12 web galleries of new collections, and printed up a bunch of 4x6 proof in Lightroom.
All this on top of having my mail client, IE7 - with a ton of - pages and tabs opened and closed in that time, and having encoded 3' minutes of video as well.

I think my system was just plain tired..... and it was trying to tell me.. "Hey Dude"... give me a freakin' break! I'm tired, I'm dazed and confused! ...I need a re-boot!

Those deletions were probably just "the straw that broke the camel's back."

Anyhow, a few minute reboot appears to have save me a ton of time waiting for Lightroom to do its thing.
I hope this helps some others out there.

Victoria works on a Mac so does not have to reboot every today to keep the system stable. Us PC users know this and although my system is running 24/7 it's first job every day is a reboot.

Don't you know it, and fortunately for me, the darn thing has decided that in case I forget, it'll just go ahead and randomly reboot itself. Grrrrr.

One of these days I'll be moving to Mac........ brad s
