It seems Adobe intentionally uses different terminology for the same concepts in LrC and Lr. So on Classic we have Collections and Collection sets, and in the Cloud we have Albums and Folders. Does anyone know why?

My actual question though is whtether people have tips or tricks to keep Collection Sets and Folders in sync, as far as i can tell Adobe does not do this automatically. So i make a new Collection in a Collection Set. I have a corresponding Folder in the Cloud and i mistakenly look in that folder, but of course the new Album is at the root, not in the Folder container. I spend not a small amount of time creating duplicate structures. I am pretty sure there is no way around this but thought i would ask.

Thanks!
Rob.

keep Collection Sets and Folders in sync,
They are not meant to be in sync.

Different teams worked on Lightroom and Classic Collection Sets nest. Lightroom folders (a bad naming choice BTW) do not nest. So they can never be equivalent. Folders do not sync to Collection sets But Albums do sync to Collections. It is best IMO not to try to equate Collection Sets with Lightroom "Folders" .

Its easy the recreate if you want to. All you have to do is create your own equivalent folders in Lr (equivalent to the relevant Collection Set). This will usually be created at root level. When you sync a collection from LrC which resides in a Collection set (in LrC) it will sync to Lr but will only sync to the root level and not inside the folder you created. All you have to do is move / drag the albumn inside that folder. Once you have done this any changes just sync as usual. I do this for all my LrC Collection Sets and collections.

Consistency in naming things has always been a weak spot in the Lightroom arena. One can speculate on why, but I think it's a combination of things including different teams in different locations who don't talk to each other all that much, marketing people with alterior motives, rush to meet release dates and "temporary working names" that were meant to be changed don't get changed, difficulty of engineering staff to visualise the impact of names on the actaul user base, Etc.

The worst though, IMHO, is the stealing the "Lightroom" name from the historic product and re-assigning it to the new LR/Cloud ecosystem and then having to rename the old one Lightroom Classic. This is still confusing people. And there are several other naming/labeling issues that are close behind.

Because no-one stopped them? I don't think it was a great move, but people seem to be able to cope with the names.

No tips, other than to try to take advantage of the disconnection in whatever ways make sense to you. In LrM I don't need as many collections or levels.

I don't know if the phrase "a cuckoo in the nest" means much outside Europe. Anyway, here it's a bird that lays its eggs in other birds' nests, something known as brand brood parasitism (though of course all creatures have their place in the world).

I started my Lightroom journey with LrM iPad. I always used Years as my top level folders long before Lightroom . So continued with 2000, 2001 etc.
When moved to Lightroom on iPad, decided to prefix all album with two digit year. When I added classic and synced through all Albums were in year order in the collections. So no need to move them into collection sets.
For any other grouping I could build special collections based on criteria.

Collection Sets nest. Lightroom folders (a bad naming choice BTW) do not nest. So they can never be equivalent.
Lightroom Folders can indeed be nested, but only up to 5 levels.

In America there is the native Brown-Headed Cowbird, which not only lays eggs in other birds nests, but has no respect whatsoever for naming conventions and folder structure.

In Classic I use mostly Smart Collections which are not available as such in Lightroom So I have a big disconnect between Lightroom and Classic In Lightroom there is also a Smart Album which are not nearly as smart as Classic's Smart collection AND these do not sync between Classic and Lightroom

I’ve long since given up hope for rationalizing lots of oddities about LR (generic for all iterations). Given its long history and evolution, it’s probably a minor miracle that it works as well as it does, idiosyncrasies (“as designed”) and all.
