Synchronizing folder without bringing back

Yes, you get an import dialog after synchronising just like importing.

Yes but you still have to remember which photos you had previously discarded. If you are dealing with a few then that should be ok but if you are talking 1'''s then that would take time and you may miss a few.

Before discarding in the first place you could apply a key word "disgarded" or "removed" to the xmp file. When you synchronise just import them all again and then filter out those with that key word and remove again.

Good tip about the keywords. I didn't have too much trouble as it was just one folder this time as I was sorting things out and removing duplicates from my hard drive.

Why are you removing them? If you don't want them any more, then delete them. If you want to keep them, leave them in Lightroom so it can manage them.

Just my weird way of doing things right now. Working out a rating, flagging, etc system as I get more into photography.

Well, removing items is just making work for yourself, you know. Do you make any use of LR's filtering, so you see only those you want to see?

To give you an example, during my initial run through a folder, the filter is set to Unflagged. So with Caps Lock on, I go through hitting P U or X - keep, unsure, or junk. Ones I really like might get a rating at this time. Every so often I'll use Ctrl or Cmd Backspace to trash all the the X's, and will run through again a couple of times until there are no unflagged pictures. Ratings are

1 OK (hm, I quite like)
2 Show (confident others will like)
3 Good - worth printing
4 Boast - hang on wall!
5 Flaunt - Showcase

In reality, I'm less systematic than I make things sound, but there's never any question of messing around removing images.

Thank you for sharing. That is the type of thing that I'm working to set up for myself. I'll have to use your suggestions as a starting point. Just an example of how great Lightroom is if you use it correctly. Only 3'K pictures to go through. :)

serena, what kind of shooting do you do? John's excellent advice will work very well for many photog's. I've developed a slightly different workflow in my own event driven 'professional' work (and I use the term loosely :) ). You can read about it here.

Thanks Brad I don't do events but I like your system. It seems quick and to the point. Both methods mentioned are better than what I am currently doing so I'll be picking parts to make something that works for me. I appreciate the input. Very helpful.
