My external hard drive containing my LR catalog recently crashed. When I opened LR from an automatically backed-up version, I received a message about synching having been discontinued due to the automatic backup version possibly not being up to date. How should I handle this? I will make a new backup copy as soon as I receive a new external HD, but would like to use my current LR images in the 2-3 day interim.

Turn on sync. The warning is just a warning, and it is correct because you did use a backup to restore your catalog. BTW, you don’t need sync to work with your local images.
