Switch from Library to Develop incredibly slow

Dear all.

Maybe someone has an idea

After starting LR 2.3, I am in grid view in the Library module.
Regardless whether I mark one or multiple images, the first switch to the Develop module takes 35 to 4' sec.

Switching back to Library is instantly.
The 2nd, 3rd, ... switch to Develop after this takes "only" 4-5 sec.

You can see my system in my signature, the catalogue and all images (approx. 7.5'') are on the main harddisk (C: )

Two additional remarks:
- Switching from Library to Web is 2'-25 sec
- The same on my sons Macbook (running MacOS) is instant.

Many thanks for any idea ...

First open takes a short while here too Michael - I don't think it loads that module until it needs it.

While you're there though, check your Camera Raw Cache size in preferences - bigger is better if you've got the disc space available, as it'll help loading speed in Develop module.

The specs I read on that machine mention nVidia graphics. There've been numerous parameter setup issues noted in the past. Search this forum (button at top right) - for keyword "nVidia", and also look at this thread.

Also, any Lr performance question should consider the impact of security/AV software. What's your setup there?

Thank you for these hints. Here are some more details:

- ACR Cache size is 1' GB.
- Yes, I've read "all" (okay, to be fair: many) nvidia-threads.
They helped to speed up things: nearly all sliders in Develop are now "instantaneous", except two: cropping and rotating. Both are not fun to use.
- I am using Norton Internet Security. Both directories for catalogue and my images are excluded from scanning. Should I exclude more?

Thank you so far.
Just for curiosity - 35sec for loading the Develop module is standard on XP?

As long as the excluded directory for the 'catalog' includes the preview cache *.lrdata, I think you've got it covered.

On my desktop system, spec below, I recently conducted a cold start of Lr to Library module, selected all the images in the 2''7 directory tree of 15,9'' images. From the press of the Develop module button to free sliders was 11 secs. Deselect all but one image, and Develop to Library, and Library to Develop, about '.5 to 1.5 secs each.

Brad.

lrdata is included, I also included the ACR cache.

I'd love to see only 11 sec - it's consistently 3'-35 sec, regardless whether I select one or 5'' images.

Well, that's annoying. Sounds like you've addressed all the common issues.

Everything's on the C: drive ? Programs, Windows, Lr catalog and images?

Have you tried:
a) defaulting the Lr preferences file, or
b) a test catalog with a subset of images ?

Yep, just shift them somewhere else like your desktop.

As Geoff says, moving the current prefs file out of the folder will work. I usually just append a '.bak' suffix to the whole file name, for the temporary experiment.

I've tried now both:
a) no change, still 3'sec
b) new catalogue, 2 images. ==> 25sec

I will now try, whether defrag auf C: may help. (57GB of 14'GB are free - so my hope is limited)

If anyone else has any further ideas ... I would be glad.

Thanks a lot so far

Michael, is that the first time you open Develop, or every time you open Develop?

Victoria - only the 1st time, when I switch to Develop. After that it takes 4-5 sec.
See more details in my posts #1 and #4.

I wouldn't worry then Michael - it takes a bit longer on the slowest machines while it loads up fully.
