Is there a way to look at the contents of a stack i Survey Mode without having to expand the stack previously?

Not directly. However, you can exploit the feature that Smart Collections are Stack Blind. Let's say you have selected a folder in the folders panel to work on today and that folder contains stacks of images. Create (or re-use) a Smart Collection that selects for that folder. If you are using filters in the filter bar as well, make sure the lock icon is locked at the right end of the filter bar for this to work.

Start using the a Folder as your source as normal. Select images as you normally do. Then, let's say you're in the Survey view with several images displayed and you want to see the buried images under one that is displayed.

Note that first image is the top image in a stack of 4, so 3 are hidden when using a Folder as the Source

Now click the parallel Smart collection and the 3 buried images appear on film strip

Shift Click those buried images in the film strip and they pop into the Survey view

What I am wishing for is a way to select one stack in Grid view and then directly be able to view its contents in Survey view, if it is possible at all.

Shift-Click on the stack in grid view, that will expand the stack and automatically select all the images in the stack. Then press N to open them into Survey view.
