catalogue error all files are missing help

I guess i did something really stupid.

Lr didn't open and reported an error. then it was checking integrity but still did'nt work. then i checked a website and found this: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/4'4/kb4'4835.html
after this lr worked again but all my files where gone. it feels as if all the blood has exit my head...

what should i do?

Amy

Maybe you have more than one catalog. Under library mode, click on file> open recent then you should see( hopefully more than one catalog) ; click on the other catalog. You will get a window saying do you want to relaunch LR with this catalog? hit relaunch and cross your fingers( and pray)!

Ok, i managed to get al the pictures back. indeed there was a catalog 2! the blood is back in my head, but the old problem is back. It says:

"lr encountered an error when reading and needs to quit"

after trying again it says:
"lr ..shut down prematurely due to a problem reeding the catalog. LR must check ..before opening"

and then it still fails to operate.

I read something about a *.lock file which should be removed. I managed to locate this file but i am a bit anxious to remove it.

What should i do?

thanks so far!

Hi Amy,

I do not know how to answer this. I see Victoria is currently on the forum maybe she can help out here.

I managed to find back my catolog which i accidently removed. But the following message keeps popping up:

"lr encountered an error when reading and needs to quit"

after trying again it says:
"lr ..shut down prematurely due to a problem reeding the catalog. LR must check ..before opening"

and then it still fails to operate.

If Lightroom is closed, you can safely delete the *.lock file if it's still there. If you're concerned, just move to to another folder and you can move it back later.

It sounds like your catalog may be corrupted - when was your last catalog backup?

Amy, I'm sorry to say it sounds like your catalog is corrupted. Do you have a recent backup?

Victoria,

What are the causes of catalog corruption? What steps can be done to prevent this from happening?

Hi Amy, I have merged the two threads as I think they would be better off together. Don't panic (Or bleed to death!!) most of these issues do get resolved.
Robert, if we knew what caused corruption it would be solved probably!!

How big is your catalog Amy? I am talking about megabyte size......

no, no backup. i didn't know i had to back up the caltolog until now. i only made auto backups of imported files

so i made the first catalog backup just this afternoon..

You might try creating a blank new catalog and then attempting to import your old catalog into it.

i don't know excactly, might be 2' gb big
Look for the .lrcat file and see what size that is.....
The suggestion of creating a new catalog and importing to that from the old one is a good idea, you may want to import a bit at a time as this may isolate where the problem is.;)

Hold down the alt key while opening LR.

Would it make more sense to re-import from Amy's master files to a new catalog ( more work) as oppose to importing from a corrupted catalog? It seems to me that if one were to re-import from a corrupted catalog, you are going to import the "corruption."

when i press alt i get a screen with lots of options and still i don't know what to do. sorry..

o wait! fist press lr, then alt...i'll try again!

Importing from a catalog will retain all settings that have been applied. Importing just the files may bring in some settings depending on file type and if autowrite is enabled.
Corruption doesn't seem to get carried over to a new catalog., the import will just stop at the problem area/file so that is why the suggestion to do it in bites.

Thanks Geoff for clearing that up.

just checking:

do you want me to reimport all photo's from the corrupted catalog to a new catolog? in that case i'm just one click away from doing so.

thanks

You should get a screen like this, just click "create new catalog", you are doing fine Amy!! Don't forget we are around the world from each other!!:lol::shock:
