In LR2, when I rank the images in the grid or in any other interface using the stars, they simply do not appear in the borders of the thumbs. Images ranked with stars are evidently being embedded with the information because they will filter out by those rankings but I have no visual reference when looking at either the grid view of loup view.

I'm runnin LR 2 on a G5 with OSX1'.4.11 .

Right-click on any image in the Grid and select "View Options..." at the bottom of the context menu. In here you can configure what is shown with the image in the grid cells.

Or if you're talking about the filmstrip, try making it just a little taller, and confirm that "Show ratings and picks in filmstrip" is checked in the Interface tab of the Preferences.

Check your view options. You can turn on what is displayed on the thumbnails in the grid. Additionally, if you have activated that and don't see them in the filmstrip, then the filmstrip is probably too small. If you increase the size of the filmstrip they should reappear.
