SSD for Lightroom

Hi!

I'm thinking of going to a SSD as my main system disk (windows) which will also hold the LR catalog and previews. Photo originals will be stored on a normal disk.
It seems LR does a whole lot of seeking on the main disk which is where SSD shines.
Has anybody done this switch and noticed a real speed increase?

I would probably go with the Intel X25-M.

I posted some anecdotal data I've encountered in answer to a similiar question on Flickr.

Flickr Lightroom - Catalog on SSD?. In that thread, I'm Purple Umbrella.

I don't know very much more than that. From what I have seen, you can generally expect performance gains, but exactly how much is quite variable based on a number of software/disk channel interaction factors, including latency, and i/o bandwidth.

Certainly seems like a worthy upgrade. But my guess is we are going to see a leap in performance/price very soon. After all they are quite expensive at the moment. I need more than 1''GB to be able to comfortably store all my LR previews and system files and only Intel seems to be a safe bet...

Not sure I agree about that bit. Intel Read speed is superb but writing is poor to middling. OCZ Vertex 2 is about to come out - the Vertex (1) wipes the floor with everything else and 2 Vertexes (Vertices?) configured as RAID' for system drive is reckoned to be the dog's spheres. I'm hooked and about to make a move!

If your motherboard supports it do a google for Intel Matrix Raid. That should offer you some nice performance increases. SSD is "better" than a normal HD, but it really shines when run in a RAID.

I have been ready to swap my software RAID HD setup for a SSD one for a while, but keep finding other things to spend the money on :)

OCZ Vertex actually seems like a pretty good competitor to Intel X25-M. You get a 12'GB OCZ for the price of an 8'GB Intel. But the Intel is quicker in all tests, especially random writes.

Vertex 2 sounds intriguing though, with internal RAID '.
There is always something better around the corner but even so I might just await the Vertex 2 and see what performance/price it has and also if the Vertex comes down a bit in price.
