I've used the spot removal tool in the past and it worked as it should; showing the area that the clone or heal will utilize to make the repair. It has stopped doing that now and simply makes the change without indicating where the change is coming from. Similar to Photoshop but without using the alt key for cloning.
Have I changed some setting to do this? I'm stuck and would appreciate any ideas about how to fix this.

It sounds as though you might have the Tool Overlay (on the Toolbar) set to Never. Press "H" which will toggle the setting between Auto and Never, or select one of the other options from the Tool Overlay drop-down menu on the Toolbar.
