Hi,
I hope that this is 'operator error'. I have a folder with some 1-star, 2-star, and '-star images in it. I choose sort by capture time, and it sorts by capture time, but puts all of the starred images on top (in order of capture time) and THEN, below that, all of the images with no stars. All of the library filters are turned off. I tried closing and reopening the catalog, searching other folders, and the behavior persists.

What I would like to see is the images sorted by capture time, regardless of star status.

thanks for any advice/help.

I can add a little bit more to this problem report:

Not just starred files, but any file that was modified in Develop module, is pushed to the top. This catalog was imported from Lightroom 1.4

That sounds a bit odd Chris, but welcome to the forum!

Try something else for me... put them into a collection and set that to Capture Time and see whether it works.

Hi Victoria,
I put one folder's contents into a collection and sorted, same problem.

I also tried another catalog (also originally 1.4, imported into 2.'), and it did NOT do this (i.e. files were sorted properly).

I am having the same problems. Even though I select Sort by Capture Date the images are sometimes displayed in 'random' order (at least, so it appears to me). Sometimes it helps to press the "a<->z" button twice, but other times the only way to solve it is restarting Lightroom. Hopefully we can find a solution, it is really annoying me!

That's not a problem I've come across, but it could be an upgrade glitch. One other thing to double check - they actually ACTUALLY the right dates/times. I've seen an incorrect year set on the camera cause all sorts of confusion in the past, although it doesn't sound like that's the problem this time. And here's the bug report form: Official Feature Request/Bug Report Form

Hi Victoria,
Yep I double-checked those time/dates and they are fine. Looks like, after closer inspection of the folders, that only one parent folder (and its 2'+ children folders) are affected. All of the other parent folders are fine.

A little more information. I started browsing the parent folder in grid mode with a filter of >= 1 star. I noticed the problem after that - when viewing individual children folders with no filters. Hope that helps. I'll post to that bug report form as well.

Any way I can 'refresh' that parent folder without losing the (substantial) collections I have created using those files? -chris

If you fancy fiddling a bit, I'd be inclined to try rightclicking on that folder and choosing Export As Catalog. That'll export all of the data to a new catalog. Then I'd see if it works nicely in that catalog. If it does, I'd remove those photos from the first catalog (not delete from disc), and use Import from Catalog to pull the exported one back in. It's a shot in the dark, but it's probably worth a shot.

And it's definitely capture time and not edited time?

Yep it's capture time. I also tried edited time and that does appear to sort properly (i.e. I modified a no-star file and it popped right to the top..)

Ok, one other test for you, if you still fancy experimenting.

Try creating a new catalog, and importing those same folders (set to 'add at the existing location' so that it doesn't mess up your other catalog. And just see whether it's the files or the catalog.

Ok, for my next trick.... ;)

Ok, that narrows it down to a catalog glitch. Try something else. Start a new catalog and try importing your current catalog into it. It's worth a try.

So in summary is there anything I can do that will

- preserve my collections, and
- refresh my catalog so that the sorting works properly in all folders?

Is there a way to export the collections as a catalog and then reimport my entire database again? All changes should be written to xmp files so this should work right?

thanks,
chris

Collections - probably about a hundred. I use the collections for every photo submission package I put together and find them indispensable. Recreating them would be, well, painful..

Think about this. Find an unused metadata field, or keyword even.
Select a collection, select all images, tag the images with the keyword, etc., write the metadata to XMP. Interestingly enough, Don R uses the metadata Label field, without colors, to track collection membership, just as you're needing. See this recent thread:

White labels ?

Import to a new catalog, filter sequentially by the keyword tags, rebuilding the collections. I'd say a hundred or so is on the borderline of doable.

Of course it would be better if it just worked right the first time! :)

Actually, I started with this method (from the link above) when I had an HD crash and rebuilt my catalog in LR2. Lost my collections from LR1. Went to this method with Smart Collections. Works for me.

Hi Brad,
Yes I can see how that would work, though time consuming.

A coding question- how does Lightroom know something is in a collection? I'm guessing that it is not something that is stored in a file's xmp data, but rather part of the catalog file? If it added xmp entries for each collection membership, then it would be easier (though maybe computationally slow) to reconstruct collections. Just a thought.

Looking through my collections, it looks like I'm actually closer to ~4'', so individually keywording each one is going to take hours. Also I don't want to have to deal with removing keywords or labels when I delete something from a collection.. Kinda defeats the purpose of having collections (why not just use keywords/filters then, like I used to do in Bridge to simulate Collections?) I'm going to try exporting all of them as a catalog and then re-importing the rest of the 8',''' or so photos in the catalog.. Should that work?

Correct, collection memberships are not stored in XMP, hence the workaround to get some kind of tag in XMP for reimport.

Honestly, I don't know; you're kind of breaking new ground here. Clearly, you shouldn't be having the problem to begin with.

Good luck, keep us posted. Anything unclear, ask again, sometimes these dialogs get a little piecemeal. (Forgetting what happened two pages of posts ago.)

I see this in a specific circumstance (Win 64 LR2 upgraded from LR 1.4). When I edit an image by right clicking it in Grid view and then Save it in Photoshop CS3 (as TIFF), it comes back at the end of the set of images in the folder which is set to sort by capture time. The correct time is shown in the metadata. So, I end up with the original CR2 image in the right place and the corresponding edited TIFF file at the end of the set. The problem persists through closing and re-opening LR.
