Sorry... what's the difference between a Preset and a Snapshot

Hi All

Apologies for this question, but can someone explain to me please the difference between a Preset and a Snapshot...? Is it simply that Snapshots can be applied on Import, and Presets cannot? or is there more...?

Snapshots are moments in time during the development of an individual image. If while you are working on an image you want to preserve a certain state so you can get back to it easily and not have to figure out where in the history list it was, then you take a snapshot.

Presets are a group of settings which can be applied to any image. You can apply them in the Library module or in the Develop module. In the develop module you have the advantage of being able to watch the preview as you hover over a preset to see what effect it will have if applied. Presets can also be applied during import if you like.

Snapshots are linked to the photo itself - they're a fixed history state.

Presets are a bunch of settings which you can apply to any photo.

The only similarity is the fact that they're both in the left hand panel in Develop.

I can also hover over a Snapshot and see the effect it has on the preview.

I am still somewhat confused at the difference. If I like the look of an image during processing, why would I not just save it as a Preset...? why would I use a Snapshot?

You'd save it as a preset if you wanted to apply it to another bunch of images at some later time.

You'd save it as a snapshot (or a virtual copy) if you wanted to try different variations on this image.

Let me try...

A Preset (specifically, a Develop Preset) is a collection of slider settings for the Develop module. It might include things like "blacks = 5". It can be applied to any image.

A Snapshot is a version of a particular image. While working on an image in Develop, you can take a Snapshot of the current settings, so that you can easily jump back to that version. It's kinda like a Virtual Copy, but limited to the Develop module.

Like Victoria says, really, the only thing that's similar about them is that they're both in the left panel in Develop.
