Some import operations not performed - missing files

Hello,
I have just downloaded nine CF cards from a wedding shot yesterday, converting to DNG as I imported. With four of the cards, I got the error message afterwards: "Some import operations were not performed. Failed to find a location for some files (')" (or words to that effect - can't remember exactly how the last bit went).
I thought it was a bit strange that it had zero for the number of files affected: it wasn't really clear whether there had been a problem or not.
My LR catalogue is showing a total of 1368 files from the wedding. But in the Finder window, there are 1667. So it seems LR is not recognising 299 files.
I tried using the Import button under the Library window in LR and directing it to the right folder on my hard drive, but it didn't find any extra files.
I then tried reimporting those four cards. Two of them yielded two extra photos, and one yielded one photo that hadn't been picked up on the first import attempt. So now I'm down to 294 missing photos.
Does anyone have any idea why I'd be getting that error message with (') as the number of files affected, and how I can work out which files haven't been imported successfully into LR? I guess I can view them in Bridge but there are so many photos from the wedding that it will be a nightmare to try to work out which ones aren't in LR.

I don't know which version of LR you are using, but LR 1 used to have issues with sometimes not importing everything from memory cards.

If Finder shows that they are all present in the folder, then in LR, right-click (ctl-click) on the folder and choose Synchronize Folders. LR should detect all images in the folder that it has not imported. It will then launch the import dialog with these images.

In the future you may be better off first copying your images from the memory cards in Finder or Windows Explorer to a folder on the desktop, and then importing and moving from there.

Hi catchacat, welcome to the forum!

Laura, great to see you posting here. We've updated machine specs, so LR versions are now in the info section on the left. I keep forgetting to look there too!

Catchacat, there have been all of 6 reports I've heard of this happening in the last 2 years or so, and no one's managed to track down reproducible steps in order to find and fix it. Do you fancy trying some investigative work? So it copied them off the card, but won't import them - is that right?

I'm interested to know initially:

1. If you start a new temporary catalog, will they import into that? That'll rule catalog specifics in or out.
2. Are you importing using the camera or a card reader to import the files?
3. If you copy to the hard drive manually, will they willingly import into Lightroom then?
4. Can you open all of the files into ACR in Bridge ok?
5. Are the filenames and foldernames all normal?
6. Do you ever lock images in the camera?

If you still can't get them to import, we can certainly give you a hand to figure out which ones aren't in Lightroom - assigning all of the LR images a colour label or star rating, selecting all in Grid view, and then hitting Cmd-S to write those ratings to xmp will show them in Bridge. I'm just fascinated to figure out what's wrong, so you don't have to worry in the future.

Hi Victoria and Laura,
Thanks for your prompt responses. Things are looking up. I should have thought to do this earlier, but I just put each of the cards back into the camera to see how many files were on each, and add them up, and it seems I DO have all the files in LR after all. I'm not sure what extra files my Finder window is registering when it gives me the higher tally, but they don't seem to be photo files.
I guess there are still the unexplained questions of why there were five photos missed on the first import, which I managed to get the second time around, and also why I was getting that "Some import operations were not performed - failed to find a location for some files (')" error message. Was there actually a problem there, do you think, if the number of files affected was zero?

Laura, I forgot to add in my original post that I had tried synchronising the folders. This didn't help locate the five extra files - they were captured in the second download attempt instead.

I'm really pleased you found them all ok. I think we might put that error message down to 'general weirdness'! Do let us know if it happens again, and then it might be worth trying to narrow down further. For now, you can relax!
