I made a snapshot of sepia tone (almost preset) image and when ever I revert back to it something goes horribly wrong.
None of the settings in the develop module seem to change, but the histogram changes and the image most definitely changes. See this:

I hope to see a solution soon.

Oh, an the image was originally imported in an older LR.

Hi all and thanks!

I'm pretty new to LR so i'm not sure about the easiest way to show you the problemo, but here is the exported catalog (one file) with the original raw image.

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/33665/LR2bug-catalog.zip (14.5Mb)

The original image was not so good as it was one of the "practice shots" and a lot of corrections had to be made to save it. I played around with it for a while and at some phase I applied the sepia tone preset, made some adjustments and took the snapshot "sepia".
As I mentioned the problem is that when I revert back to it (the snapshot) there goes something wrong...
When I noticed the problem, I took a virtual copy of the file so this is why the original catalog version is not looking the same as the version in my first post.
The problem is in both copies of the image...

PS. I'm a He (for Brad) :)

That's a pretty clever way to show a problem. Good thinking! Unfortunately, I can't seem to download it.

This latest description of the problem solves part of the confusion we were having... I think you're saying you took a snapshot in the Develop module, and called it "sepia".

It would be helpful to see that catalog. Another way to show us this might be to upload the XMP file -- hit Command-S (or Control-S on Windows), which should create a file with a .XMP extension alongside your raw file. (If you're using DNG or JPEG, you can just upload the DNG or JPEG after doing this.)

It might also be helpful to know something about your system. The subject says you're using LR2, but Mac or Windows?

Okay, thanks, got it.

The problem is the extreme settings in the HSL/Color/Grayscale panel. You've got a very large spread in the skin tones, which creates blotchiness in the skin. (Assuming that's the concern you have. You also have a fair amount of fill light, and you can pretty readily see the mask in the background leaves and around the pearl necklass.)

If you don't favor fixing this in the grayscale mix, you could try an application of localized negative clarity and/or negative sharpness, but I don't think that would be my approach.

Thanks for the reply,

the problem actually is that the snapshot tool is 'broken' with this image and I'm not sure if I can rely on it in the future.

The first image I posted shows the difference between a saved and a loaded snapshot. Some parameters are either saved or loaded with wrong values.

I'm still on the trial period of LR2 and want to buy it, but this problem is really rocking the boat... I found the snapshot feature very handy using trial of LR1.x, but when it's working like this it's not so handy if I'm not creating monsters :D

Ok, there will be updates and so on, but anyway...

I'll try to re-generate the problem with some other images next week to see if there is a real repeatable bug or was I just very unfortunate.

Cheers,
Heikki

Okay, I'm still not understanding the problem, then.

When you say the original image shows the difference between a saved and a loaded snapshot, exactly what did you click on to bring up each version?

Hey Mark,

I try to explain clearly:

I made adjustments to the image and when I felt that the sepia-look image is ready, I took a snapshot of it and named it 'sepia'.

Then I continued editing the image for an alternate version.

When I later wanted to go back to the "sepia" snapshot I took, the image got messed up. I used CMD+Z to go back to the history point "take snapshot" to retain the sepia image.

So to put it short: The left half of the first image is after the series of "CMD-Z" and the right side is after clicking the "sepia" snapshot. Both should basically look the same.

So when ever I click the snapshot named "sepia" the colors go wrong.

Thanks,

HM

Thanks, that seems pretty clear, and in a different way I can recreate your problem now, and I have a new theory.

For me, when I pull this up the Profile selected in the Camera Calibration panel is blank. I wouldn't have expected this to be possible, but maybe that's because you're using a profile I don't have installed?

If I select the ACR 4.4 profile or the Adobe Standard beta 1 profile, the image cleans up nicely. So I'm suspecting something about that profile is problematic.

(I also believe you must have originally named that snapshot "demo" and then renamed it to "sepia", and I suspect there are history steps that have been deleted. Specifically, if I click one step down to "Convert To Grayscale: Yes", I see that the color noise reduction slider moves. But this shouldn't be relevant to this particular problem.)

Thanks Mark!

You are right about the "demo" name. Thats what I used at first instead of sepia.
Ok, the profile seems empty here also and changing it to ACR 4.4 helps.

It seems that the profile gets lost when I apply the Creative-SEPIA!

I tested with another image:
1. Create virtual copy of an image (ACR still ok)
2. Apply Quick Develop "Creative - sepia" (ACR gone!)

Is this a bug or is this a feature? :D

Regards,
Heikki

Good sleuthing. It's a bug. I'll report it.

That preset file includes CameraProfile = "ACR 2.4", and it shouldn't.

You can fix this yourself for now by editing the preset manually. On a Mac, it's in
/Applications/Adobe Lightroom 2.app/Contents/Plugins/Develop.lrmodule/Contents/Resources/templates/Creative-SepiaGrayscale.lrtemplate -- edit the file by hand and remove the offending line, and all will probably be well.

Several of the other stock presets also include profiles, and also shouldn't.

Hi!
I am having the same problem in LR2.
I make a snapshot of an edited bw photo that I am happy with. I export the photo and all is ok. Then I change some settings (e.g. white balance) and after that I click on the snapshot previously created, which should be equal to hitting ctr+z or selecting undo. If I then make another export I should get two identical exported photos, but what happens is that the second photo seems to have much more noise than the first one.
Has anyone found a solution to this?

regards,
T

Hi T and welcome to the forum. Take a moment to fill in your signature plaese with aspects similar to mine please and it will save the asking of questions like this:
Are you using LR 2.' or the 2.1RC version?
If you are using 2.', try the 2.1RC and see if there is a resolution.
This is not a problem I am familiar with but I'm sure someone else will pitch in with suggestions too.

That doesn't sound like the same problem to me. To see if it's the same problem, check the Camera Calibration panel on the right and see whether a profile is listed or not. If not, it's the same problem. Otherwise it's something else.

Can you verify that everything in Develop's right panel is exactly the same either way?
