What do you mean "they were no longer visible" Standard previews are what you see in LR. A Smart Preview is a surrogate for the full view image. It is what gets sent to LR Mobile and what can be used in Develop if the original is offline Or you have opted to speed up develop computations.
If you look under the Histogram panel, there is a small Icon in the lower left that has an indicator whether the Smart Preview is available. Does this tell you the Smart Preview is missing?

Only the original photo is available. The smart preview was available before I closed and backup up the catalog but now none of them are there. This hasn't ever happened before.
You say 'no longer visible'. Do you mean that Lightroom does not show you that you have the original + smart preview underneath the histogram? We had somebody with this problem some time ago. I don't remember exactly what did the trick, but try to delete the preferences first (don't reset them, delete them from user/Library/Preferences), and if that doesn't help you may have to uninstall and reinstall Lightroom.
