why my virtual copies cannot be done from a previous selection of one smart collection?
if work with smart collections and in a selection I make a virtual copy, I must go to look for it the totality of the catalogue

it would be logical that when doing the virtual copy from smart collection, automatically happens to comprise of the same one

well, this morning is very hard to me. this virtual copy on smarts collections sometimes works, and other times no works. make me feel stupid. please,

when i´m in a smart collection and create a new virtual copy, this not appears in the smart collection SOMETIMES, it´s a bug???, it´s my fail?. i think this is important, i don`t know what i´m make bad.

This does appear to be a Bug. A Virtual Copy should have the same Metadata as the original for the Smart Collection criteria.

What is the Smart Collection criteria you are using here? What Version of LR, 2.1RC or LR 2.'?

solved. is difficult to me to explain it in english, sorry.
i have a wedding collection set for one wedding, inside this set i make some smart col with differents settings but the first is ever that the image belongs to the initial collection that contains the totality of the photos (normal collection with all photos in the set)
to solve this, i make this:
Only create the virtual copy from my normal collections and with this sistem LR includes this virtual in the smart collections. if you make a virtual from a smart collection the new virtual copy goes directly to all photographs and you need put manually in the normal collection on your set.

I'll have to try this out tonight and see if I see the same. Glad you fixed things, though!

I have proven with Vista Windows and mac 1'.4, happens the same, you need to work with a normal collection within the collection set

Well, at least one 'gotcha' then! :)

I think I understand. If you have a normal collection set, say named 'wedding' and then a smart collection that has two rules, say

collection is 'wedding' and
ISO is 1''

then, if you make virtual copies, they are not part of the 'wedding' collection. this means the smart collection will not pick them up until you add the virtual images to the 'wedding' collection.

This is similar to the work John Bearden did with his workflow collections. I have been modifying it extensively, and most of the workflow steps are centered around one predefined collection where you add the images you want to work with. This way, the smart collections help you filter what needs done, but only with the current group, not the entire library.

Nice to find a thread about an issue I'm having but from a completely different angle!

I would like a smart collection to show me all of my 5 star images - just the originals, not any virtual copies. If I have 1' such images I want it to give me just those 1' plain & simple.

But unless I'm mistaken there's no way to distinguish originals from virtual copies. Is it feature request time or am I missing something?

Mark's suggestion seemed like a good work around:
If it's based on Copy Name, for example, then the new copy may not match the rules.

The qualification I added was 'Copy Name is empty'. My 5 star SC gives me the right number. My 4 star SC has significantly more images but - also after adding this qualification - still contains virtual copies, where Copy Name is typically Copy 1, Copy 2 etc. So Copy Name clearly isn't 'empty'.

I also realised that this workaround won't work for the 4 stars or 3 stars etc (given the increasing volume of images I have no idea if it's accurate), because some of the originals do have Copy Names (typically the client name they were processed for) though my workflow has changed in the last 9 months or so and I use virtual copies for Copy Names and such, leaving the originals blank.
