Hi-
I am just now trying to make my first smart collection, but having a problem. I created a smart collection using 5 stars and purple as criteria, but no images show up. How do I point it to my “scans” folder to retrieve the images? Thanks for any help.

Use the following criteria:

This confused me. Why does it need the folder?

I would have expected the Smart Collection to have returned all matching images from the entire Catalog including the "scans" folder. Adding the folder to the criteria just limits the Smart Collection to only the "scans" folder.

What am I missing? It is going to be something really dumb :)

Thank you for your help.

You are missing nothing. Your statement is correct. However in the initial post the OP specifically said that (s)he wanted it to look at the "scans" folder.

The OP wanted image from the “scans” folder. Adding the folder criteria insures the only images from the named folder are included.

If you find yourself wanting to apply the same criteria (5 stars, Purple) to other folders and collections, a Filter preset would be easier to use:

A Filter preset can be invoked just as quickly as a smart collection, and unlike a smart collection, it is automatically restricted to the current folder or collection -- no need for re-editing the criteria, as you must do with smart collections. Filters also obey the current stacking, whereas smart collections show all matching photos even if they're buried in collapsed stacks (which is sometimes what you want).

Yes, but the OP said ‘no images show up’ which should not have been the case.
The OP did not supply a screen shot or specific description of their original Smart Colleciton setup so who knows why it returned no images

Yes, I agree, but I was trying to highlight to the OP that the answer, by itself, did not completely address the original question so they may learn for next time, as might others reading these pages.

It would be the case if the OP did not use the criteria that I suggested. When they did use my criteria, problem was solved.
