Slow previews

Hi all,

When I'm watching pictures in loupe view or in the develop module it takes so long before it renders and I can see a sharp image (5-7 sec).
What settings is the best for avoiding this? I've checked 1:1 on the import dialogue, but things are still to slow for my taste.

I'm I doing something wrong here? Should I rather pay attention to "Standard Preview Size"? I think all this is a bit confusing.

Are you trying to zoom in, or just look at the Fit view. If you're just looking at Fit view, I'd just render Standard Sized Previews. You can set that in the import dialog, or for existing photos you can select them in Grid view and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard-sized Previews. No need for 1:1 unless you're zooming in Library module (not Develop, that uses the raw data).

It's not just you - it can sometimes take a while to render full previews, especially on older computers.

I would typically recommend doing exactly what you're doing and simply walk away from the computer (or do some web browsing) while things import/generate. Then, when you come back, no more waiting.

But, if you'd prefer not to do that and view things while they import, you can always drop the quality in the import and just not zoom while you do your initial pass. Then, when you're ready to walk away you can click Library > Previews > Render 1:1 Previews. Then, the next time you use it, you'll have your full previews.

If that still won't work in your workflow, you might just have to be okay with the 5-7 seconds, or maybe look at buying a new computer. Lightroom needs that time to generate the previews and there isn't a ton you can do to make it generate them faster when needed (other than buying a new computer with more horsepower).

I don't zoom too often, and if I do I have the time to wait. It's just ordinary handling I find too time consuming (rating pictures etc). I will try to render standard size instead, and see if this suits me better.
