Hi,

I'm a newbie and searched the forum for anyone reporting a similar issue; either they haven't experienced such an issue or my 'search skills' need sharpening (the non-photo editing kind of course).

I'm running Vista 32 on a laptop. My catalog is backed-up once per day automatically and lives inside my 'Pictures' folder on the laptop's Int HD. However, all my actual image files (JPGs, CR2s and DNGs) are placed inside folders which are all contained in one root-folder which lives on my external hard-drive (WD 2TB My Book Mirror set to Raid 1 [mirror mode]). None of these actual image files reside within the laptop's HD. When I use LR to actually edit images I am always connected to the Ext HD. When I have updated the catalog on the laptop, via thumbnails, everything has run smoothly when connecting-back as the catalog lives in the laptop.

Everything has been running smoother than smooth for several weeks ever since I installed LR2.2 but yesterday night, whilst applying masks to a DNG file via the adjustment brush, everything ground to a halt. I had to eventually terminate LR via Task Manager.

When I relaunched, I was greeted with a really slow load, and, to my horror, all my thumbnails were grey! The thumbnail 'areas' (Grid, Navigator and Filmstrip) are clickable but always remain empty although metadata, keywords, history etc. are still attached to these thumbs. Jumping to Develop doesn't help matters - still grey. When I go to any image I know has been catalogued by LR within the Ext HD, and right-click / open with LR, it launches LR but the image won't appear.

What's strange is my images show up in Slideshow during previews, and in Web within the preview window and when previewed via a browser...the thumbs also show, correctly developed, whilst they are grabbed and dragged around...?

On a side-note, when I minimise the LR window and then maximize, it's as though everything, including panels, is being re-drawn again; it all starts out white. Also, things seems slower.

I have 'show hidden files' activated and can see tonnes of DCM files in my various pic folders; are these related to LR; i'm guessing they relate to Vista generally though? All my actual folders and collection sets/collections are still present within LR, with greyed-out thumbnails of course. I have tried to load-up several of my previous catalogs (backups of my one and only catalog) but these problems continue.

I guess what I'm saying is....help..someone, anyone, pleeeeeeaaaaazzzzzz....

Yeay!

I just logged in as Admin on my laptop and launched LR, importing a folder of images already being used by me when logged in normally (as a non-admin user). The folder imported fine and thumbnails were generated as expected.

I then tried to open my latest catalog back-up, and it worked fine! Everything seems to be there in fine fettle! At least I can rescue the situation...phew!

Howeevr, it seems that the software is fine, but some sort of settings have gone corrupt, when I was on my usual user account, regarding the way my catalog or LR loads-up. Then again, I think I may have changed my colour profile without realising it...ok, I'm going to uninstall Lightroom and re-install it as my usual user-self, and see what happens.

Thank God for catalog back-ups!

Finally...

Right, firstly, excuse my incessant updates. lol

I had changed the colour profile and it seems this threw LR. I have changed it back to sRGB and everything is fine.

Atma, first, Welcome to the Forums.

Secondly, apologies, that no one came to your rescue. Although, over the course of 36 minutes, I'm not surprised.

Thirdly, great that you've solved the problem. Corruption in the video, drivers or profiles, is the most frequent culprit in the 'gray box' problem.
