Slow Import Dialogue Opening

Hi

When opening 'Import' in Library Module it takes over 6' seconds for the 'Choose a source ....' dialogue box to open. Not the end of the world but ....

Until a few weeks ago it was working fine (near instant response). What changed? Well, if I knew that I wouldn't be here! Everything else works fine.

I've tried reinstalling LR (V2.4) and everything else appears up to date.

Had actually already done most of those steps listed except for #4 - just done that and no change, still the delay.

Have you added any external/networked drives or storage ? It can take Windows a while to access these types of drives sometimes and that can slow down the file opening dialogue. Do any other applications have the same issue ?

Yeah, I'd second Nik's guess, probably taking time to spin drives up.

The reason this came to mind is because it seems to be an issue in Snow Leopard :(

*update* I have just tried unchecking the 'put hard drives to sleep' option in the power saver options, hopefully this will help. Reading these forums seems to kick-start the grey matter sometimes !

No and No!

I've been running quite happily with the images on a Freecom external HDD for a long time - nothing new added around the time of the problem. No other applications suffer the same issue.

Just to check created a new (empty) catalogue and disconnected the Freecom - problem persists!

Just noticed a 2.5 update - will give this a go ..... [ Now installed but problem remains ]

Next in line, I'd look at moving the preferences aside to rebuild at default settings, to see if that helps. Moving, rather than deleting, so that if it doesn't help, you can put them back without having to reset your preferences.

Then I'd try a clean catalog to see if that does the trick.

Then I'd have a cup of tea and think again!!

I've deleted the Lightroom Preferences.agprefs file - no difference
I've created a new (empty) catalog - no difference
I've definitely had a cup of tea! That made a difference ... to me!

I'm not convinced it's a Lightroom issue as the re-installs have had no effect. I think I've had another update somewhere though damned if I know what or where!

Again, thanks for taking the time to give it some thought.

My housekeeping is usually pretty good and I regularly clear out the trash, defragment etc. but just to be sure I've just emptied it completely and, you've guessed it, no difference! Damned frustrating!

My next guess is that something is running in the background such as an incomplete update to Windows or another program scheduled to check for updates. So, go to Windows Update and let it go to the end and redo to check. Make same for the insane Javascript updating almost daily etc. There is also Acrobat Reader, QuickTime, and probably some others lurking.

Go to Configuration Panel in the Scheduled Tasks and check what it is in there... :icon_neutral:

Otherwise, I am lost at the moment...

anything new plugged into USB ? CF card left in a printer Pict Bridge / reader... clutching at straws a bit but you never know...

I saw that but was thinking more around smaller stuff rather than external drives.. some printers allow a CF card to be inserted, it would be something easy to forget.

Antivirus real-time checking anything pertinent to images or Lr folders? Windows off-line search indexing running? (Sorry, forget the proper name for that, and too far past my bedtime to search for it right now.)

I had that thought as well, so unplugged my USB hubs to isolate anything plugged in - no difference!

This is where I think the issue lies - something somewhere has been updated or changed - what and where who knows! I will check it all through as you suggest.

I was kinda hoping somebody would say "hey - I had that and I fixed it by ..." - oh well. Time for another cup of tea (if all else fails, drink tea)!!

Disabled Windows Fast Search as soon as it was installed! What a PITA that is !!

Changed to Avira anti virus after PC Guard was also causing web browser hanging, thought it might be the cause so disabled it and ... well you know the rest.

When I get a few minutes I'm going to go off the network, no peripherals plugged in, everything running disabled and see what that does!
