Slideshow to Webpage???

Hi... First of all I am happy to have found this forum. I have only just joined and although I have a specific question to ask here I intend to use the forum often. I am afraid that my knowledge of LR is zilch right now but as I learn I hope to sometime be in a position to help others... Thank You.

My question is this, I have a feeling this is going to be a long posting, if so... Sorry. I have LR v1 and bought it sometime ago. I have been just scratching the surface with its features. I also have a basic web site, nothing special, just some photos and a bit of text. What I want to do is to put a slide show on my website... Very simple you may say and it probably is... but I have to add that I did manage to do this once before some time ago and now cant for the life of me remember how I did it. I have 33 photos on the bottom in the film strip, picked a slide show template and have added them. That part no problem, so far, so good . Now the fun starts ... What do I do now? I have the WEB tab clicked at the top right of the page and toward the bottom where it says 'ftp server here are my settings... Server = my name, Password = as selected, server path = htdocs, ftp port = 21 and 'use passive mode for data transfers is ticked. I then click on 'upload' and it appears the slide show is uploaded to somewhere but where that somewhere is I have no idea. When it is uploading, at the top right of the screen a thin bar slowly goes across with the names of the images showing quickly. But I just dont know where to look afterwards. I am assuming that somewhere after the upload I can find a file or something (sorry for my total lack of knowledge) and somehow put a link to that in my web site so that when anyone clicks on it the slide show will start. Can anyone tell me... am I doing the right thing so far? Perhaps I am going about it in totally the wrong way. I think the main things I need to know are, when the photos are uploaded, where are they saved and what would the link be that I have to use on my website. Also, where will the photos be stored, I would not think on my h/d, more than likely on the server of Fasthosts, (my web site host(is that what they are called)):| What makes it more frustrating is that I have allready done it before but dont remember how.

I have tried to explain how best I can but probably have left out much info. But hopefully, it will make enough sence for someone to read this and at least point me in the right direction :up::right::down::left:. I will always be able to give more info if asked, and am more than willing to phone anyone, anywhere if it is easier to talk me through it. I would of course pay for the phone call but know that would mean someone giving their number to me... I can give mine anytime, but am not asking for anyone to phone.

The files go directly to the directory you specify on your domain when you upload directly from LR.
If you have a site name that equals your name then your show should be at a location of : www.yourname.com/htdocs/index.html

OR http://www.nigalius.co.uk/htdocs/index.html

Suggestion:
Upgrade to version 1.3.1
In the Upload settings pane in the Web Module select FTP server and create (edit) a custom setting for yourself.
In the Server Path box, instead of htdocs try something more descriptive such as - galleries
In the upload settings pane you have the option of specifying a subpath each time you upload a gallery.

So today your full path could be
http://www.nigalius.co.uk/galleries/big_fish
and tomorrow you can make another gallery and upload to
http://www.nigalius.co.uk/galleries/little_fish

in these examples the only thing that changed was the subpath folder in the Upload settings pane.

If you go to your directory on Fasthosts you may be able to find your slideshow there and should be able to move it into a suitable location.


If you do not have access to the ftp site of your server but do have the ability to upload a folder to it then you can chose to Export the slideshow instead of Upload. With this option you will specify a location on your hard drive, name a folder and the slideshow and all relevant files will be saved there. Then you can simply upload the folder to your site.

I use both methods as necessary. For my .Mac site dropping a folder in the relevant location is simple. Knowing the ftp address is not.

Nigalius, please fill in you Signature with system and gear info so that we can better answer questions down the line (especially as you have indicated you have lots of them). You can find the the place to Edit you Signature under USer CP on teh tool bar above and help with it on our Portal page.

Hi Don, thanks for putting me right with my signature. I do not see it yet but no doubt it will show when I have posted this. I invested today in vsn 1.3 of LR... Hope you can put up with some of my questions. I fully intend to find out a lot by myself, after all, that is part of the fun, but sometimes if I get really stuck I will post to the forum and hope that someone will help.

Do you have other FTP software that you can use to view your webspace? There's plenty of free FTP software available. You may find it easier to figure out where it's putting the files then.
