Sharpening using Paint Brush

[size=1'pt]Hello, It seems that when I use the paint brush to sharpen part of my image, it does not have a very strong effect even set to 1''%, where as if I just use the normal sharpening tools for the whole image it works fine. But in most cases for my pictures I only require selective sharpening, is this a known issue?[/size]

Are you zoomed into 1:1 view?

Is does not seem to me that the same sharpening mechanism is used for painting compaired with the normal tool, obviously there are not the same controls for radius, masking, detail and strength. So I suppose I am asking what is used to create this effect? Thanks for your help.

I believe, but cannot immediately confirm, that when applying sharpening via the adjustment brush, it is affecting the Amount. The settings for the other controls are the same across the image, and are affected by the sliders in the Detail panel.

I have a recollection of reading this somewhere, though I can't seem to find a source to cite right now.

Okay that makes sense, so I will need to set the radius, mask and detail first in the Sharpening panel and then use the brush, with the appropriate amount. Many thanks for your help, I will give it a try.

I don't know exactly what you want to achieve, but have you considered using Clarity instead of, or as well as Sharpening? It's essentially wider area mid-tone sharpening.

John, All I want is selective sharpening of part of the picture using the brush, rather than the whole area. I would normally go to Photoshop for this task, but I wanted to try the brush in LR and found that it was not very effective even at 1''% setting. This was the basis of the question, I normally use the clarity slider for the whole picture to boost the mid range, as you suggest. But I have not tried to use the brush with clarity, do I read into your suggestion that the sharpening is ineffectual using the brush, as I have found?

No, don't read that much into it. Sharpening is an inherently local effect, and for example I might apply some sharpening to eye lashes, but then I would apply Clarity with the brush to the rest of the face to make it more obvious in the overall composition. Prime areas are the cheekbones or the nose, or wrinkles on the forehead.
