Is it just my imagination, or is the sharpening a bit better in Lightroom 2.'? (Sorry if this has been discussed - I'm new here.)

Erm, I'm not aware of any capture sharpening changes between 1.4.1 and 2.' beta, but I might have had my eyes closed..... ;)

On the other hand, we do now have proper Export sharpening in 2.', which is a fantastic upgrade.

Don't you ever sleep, Victoria?!

No difference at all, then? Then my eyes really are going. (Which also explains how I managed to spell Lightroom without a 't'.) It's a shame, though, because this is one of the things Lightroom might do a bit better. Still, I'm saving my pennies for Lightroom 2.'. It looks very nice indeed. I still have to practice a bit with the brush tool, though. I wonder why 'contrast' isn't in there with 'exposure', 'brightness', 'saturation' and 'clarity'?

Because Clarity is a kind of local contrast. Anyway, they've already said it's all still in flux, so you never know what will be there in the final release.

In what way 'better' are you hoping to see Lightroom's sharpening improve? I'm pretty happy with the combination of capture sharpening in Develop followed by output sharpening on export. What are you hoping to see?

Edit - ooooooh, that was really bad english - but you know what I mean!!!!

I have to admit I didn't know about the export sharpening. In any case, I once watched a friend work with PS CS3, and it just seemed that there were so many different ways to go about sharpening an image, depending on the kind of blur involved. I don't have PS myself, so I can't be more specific, I'm afraid. I suppose I'd just convinced myself that the new version had better sharpening because I really wanted it to be better. You can't, for example, sharpen specific areas, can you? Like just the eyes? That's what I first looked for when I saw the select tool. (But then I imagine if it were TOO good nobody'd buy PS anymore, would they?)

terriblino,

Excellent article on sharpening by the late Bruce Fraser:

Shapening Workflow

Note that this is pre-LR vintage, but the conclusions are applicable in current versions of LR. (LR2 is more flexible ...)

terribilino, you can sort of sharpen just the eyes by using the Mask slider to exclude some of the other textures. It's not a localized correction, but the eyes usually have hard enough lines that you can get them sharpening with a high masking value, to exclude most other things.
