Sharing LR 2.3 in an Office

I am new to LR 2 and this forum, if this query has been posted please refer me to the thread. :D

We have over 1'' GB of photos and I am the primary editor. Others on staff will need to be able to access the edited pix and use the keywords for sorting. I have written to Adobe, they say go to their site and put it on a wish list. :roll:I would like to know if anyone has a work around for this situation. 8)

The only way is for one at a time:
  • User A move the catalog from a network location to his machine and open it to do his job then copy the catalog back to the netwok location.
  • User B move the catalog from a network location to his machine and open it to do his job then copy the catalog back to the netwok location.
  • User C move the catalog from a network location to his machine and open it to do his job then copy the catalog back to the netwok location.
  • ...
EDIT: For best safety, ask the LAN Administrator to set the maximum users to one for the share where the catalog will be and educate the users to stay away from it when they don't need to grab the catalog.

The reason to move rather than copy in the first step is to avoid someone working on an outdated copy. The reason to copy rather than move in the second step is to provide an additional backup.

Any chance others in the office have Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop, along with many other Adobe products)?

If they simply need to view/search, you might be able to get away with keeping things online and you acting as the only editor. Then others can view in Bridge, using keywords or any other applied metadata to search for things and export as needed.

If folks need to edit or you don't have Bridge, I'd second Denis' recommendations.

Maybe this is a job for a Drobo external drive. Store the catalog, previews and photos on the drive and backup on the additional disk. Each user will have to use the Drobo to work with, make changes and backup. There would be less chance of someone working with outdated data. The challenge would be to make sure the Drobo does not get lost or stolen.

Thanks Ken! Forgot about that one... This all depend on their workflow but they should really give it some consideration. Who knows? This may be it, they are the judges...
