Every time I start Lightroom now I get this Server Busy error message - Swirch to . . . Retry etc - if I wait it goes away when I click retry - but takes several attempts. Any idea what's causing this? LR 6.8 Windows 10 Thanks

EDIT:: Now after I get into the programme and click 'IMPORT' it hangs and then crashes! :( I hope someone can offer a solution quickly.

Usually non specific messages like this can be traced to internet connectivity. It could be your local network (wifi problems or slowness), Your ISP or any number of intermediate servers between you and Adobe. The time it takes to send an packet to Adobe and get a response is longer than the time out period. The network command TRACERT (Trace route) can show you where the latency exists and may give you some clues as to whether it is your local network, ISP or out of your control.

I'm not on a subscription - stand alone version

Even the perpetual license needs to periodically check to make sure that your license is valid and that the 2 computer install limit has not been exceeded

I realise this is a bad time of year to get help - but I urgently need some suggestions - also now hitting IMPORT causes a 'Not Responding' message - and the only way out is to close the programme via Task Manager. Re-booting the computer fixes it - for maybe two imports only.
This is the error message I get on starting the programme - I don't know what is causing it but I'm certain it has nothing to do witrh contacting Adobe. The message goes away after maybe 30 seconds or on repeated clicking. Never seen this until recently - I have Lightroom on my desk and laptop - never seen this on the laptop.

AWP,

That means some internal service in Lr is failing to respond. Historically the service which appears to stall is the Adobe license check.
Another common potential issue is related to networking, when you make an internal network socket communication in an application the service can "pause" while it waits for networking to resolve.
The most common way to eliminate both variables is to disable and/or disconnect all networks before starting Lr.

Thanks for that - I'll try disconnecting the network - but why should this be happening now I wonder. I've used Lightroom for years without this problem. Right now my more serious problem is the IMPORT issue - clicking IMPORT just causes Lightroom to NOT RESPOND and I have to force close down and re-boot before it works again. I've never had this issue before either. :(

This "server busy" message is a long term annoyance that only affects Windows, and only some Windows installations. Unfortunately, I am one of them, and it has affected my PC for a couple of years. Dreamweaver also used to produce the dialog upon startup, but now it is only Lightroom and it survived a complete system rebuild (done for other reasons) and upgrading to Windows 10. I've been in direct contact with Adobe's Lightroom engineers and I know they are taking it seriously. We've tried a range of things but it has proved very difficult to explain or fix.

It has never stopped me getting into Lightroom, though that is always one's fear. I find it generally goes if you wait a couple of seconds before clicking the message.

It's almost certainly a different issue from a Not Responding crash.

But Andrew, can you think of anything that may have changed recently or anything odd? For example, I mentioned Dreamweaver also had the problem, not other CC apps, and also my PC connects to the internet via a wifi router that is wired to a second router. Neither fact has helped, but we need to find a pattern. So anything

I have discovered something that might be the cause. I've had an internal drive go down - possibly due to a short sharp power cut the other day. There was no data on it apart from an ID text file. It is reported by disk management as RAW - which I believe is a format Windoes ca't read. I'm wondering if Lightroom is expecting to find the drive and that is what is causing the hang? Long shot maybe. It doesn't show up in Lightroom at all - as it never had pictures on it - so maybe not. I'm trying for now to delete the drive through disk management to see if that makes a difference - but not sure it's going to let me do that. Any thought? Thanks!

I should say - everything in Lightroom works as it should - except IMPORT. Very frustrating.

Andrew,
LR could very well be trying to access that drive on import, if for no other reason than to be able to show it in the list of possible input locations. Have you tried to physically disconnect the drive?

That's what I wondered too Hal. I've tried to 'delete' it though disk management so far without success - either that or the process takes a very long time - never done it before. If you mean physically pulling out cables - then no - not yet - not sure how I would identify the drive - there are five drives insie the computer. :(

re deleting drive: "request could not be performed because of an I/O error" not sure what that means exactly though

Yes, that's a tough one. You could try process of elimination. Disconnect a drive and see what doesn't show up. Also, drives list their sizes, and you might be able to narrow it down that way. Or call for outside help. It wouldn't surprise me if your problem with import refuses to go away until you resolve the issue with the failed drive.

Good News! I seemed to have been successful in deleting the drive in Disk Management - it no longer shows up in file explorer. After rebooting Lightroom is now opening without that error - and IMPORT is working as it should. Let's hope it stays that way. :)

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

I spoke too soon - Drive G the problem has returned - showing up in file explorer again and the Lightroom problems have returned! :( Looks like I will have to go in and physically unplug it.

3rd time lucky - found the G drive - unplugged - and everything now seems OK. A bit daunting but not too bad once you get inside the computer. Fingers crossed that's the end of the problem.

Good to hear

This is just a guess. Has your ISP made any changes? Do you notice any slowdown when you browse the web or get email or stream a movie?

Phil

so far so good - no error message - and no problem getting into IMPORT - let's hope this helps others
