Serial Number for D80?

I've seen multiple references to sorting by camera serial number, and I've searched for info on how the serial number is incorporated into Lr 2.', but so far I'm still in the dark.

My system (Win XP SP3) doesn't show a serial number from my D8' when I import NEF files (it shows a blank serial number field), and I'm wondering whether this import only occurs with the more expensive models? Or should I expect that my D8' serial number should show up in Lr 2.'?

D8' doesn't embed that info, as far as I know. I've just checked back a load of files - no serial on D2X, D2H, D7', D8', D2''. Serial number is shown on the D3''. Those are the only Nikons I've got in this catalog right now.

At the suggestion of Thomas Knoll (in another forum) I tried ExifTool, and that program indeed shows an embedded serial number for my D8', but the field in Lr 2.' is blank.
