Seeing the effect of sharpening?

OK, I know that in LR3, you will be able to directly see the full effect of moving the Sharpening slider in the Develop module. In LR2, you can only see the effect in 1:1 mode.

So is there any trick or shortcut for seeing the full effect in LR2? Now I have to switch to either Slideshow or Library Loupe mode to see the result. (As a patch, I have therefore made a few saved presets with different sharpening that I can use in the Quick Develop module, but this is very awkward, having to use Quick Develop for sharpening).

You will see an effect but a "full" effect? I doubt! One can see the full effect on print but always think that your screen is something around 1'' pixels per inches... Hence the old minimum of 1:1 to make a good guess at it.

In Lightroom 2 you may update the preview after work in Develop and see...

I beg to differ! I could see noticable effects of high sharpening in LR3 Beta, and also in LR2 when performing the sharpening using Presets. Of course it has be quite high sharpening, like 75-1'' or even more, but in some cases one wants to use it to produce "artful" effects.

Try it yourself! You might like it :-).

Welcome Hans. I know that, and it frequently lead peoples to oversharpening. Just wanted to make the (screen/print) difference clear to all.

Hans, I tend to agree with Denis.

You're quite correct, in that you can see the effects of sharpening. But I think there's a significant learning curve in discerning the effect that the sharpening visible in your Lr display device translates to your chosen output device. If your only output will be to the web to be displayed on systems of resolution similar to yours, then you can probably come pretty close. If you're going to be outputting to print devices or web services with their own display resizing quirks, you may have some empirical experimentation to do.

I guess my answer to your specific question in the OP is, no, there's no real trick or shortcut, other than forcing a 1:1 preview render in the Library module. My meta-answer is, even then, what you're seeing may be a illusion, that may or may not be reflected in your output. Not a problem specific to Lr, but due to the significant differences between various display and print technologies.
