Saving Keywords in the photo itself

Intro
I am a beginner and started to use lightroom demo to organize my 3 year old collection ,

Scenario
1. I want to use keywords and labels extensively to tag the images .One of my aims is to save these keywords on to the file itself so that other programs which can read these tags are also able to search , basically not stopping myself to lightroom or in case something happens a backup.

1.1 I've click on sync meta data or copy metadata ,fine again . in the catalog setting i have selected automatically make changes to xmp


Problem
When I am using keywords to tag these images , after syncing meta deta setting other programs such as aperture or leap(osx program for tagging) are not able to see them . Is there something I am missing ?

LR won't touch the original .jpg or RAW files. You have to export another copy of the images before your keywords will become visible to external programs.

With automatically write changes into XMP checked then Lightroom will write the keywords and color labels to each file. It just may take a little time to get caught up initially.

You can also select the files and press CMD/CTRL+S to manually write to XMP.

"Lightroom won't touch the original files" is a misconception. One have to consider files and images embedded in them separately. The good concept is: "Lightroom won't touch the original images". Thus, this allow for writing to the files in the header section and not changing the image section of the same file for JPEGs, TIFFs, DNGs and PSDs. Exception is that it will not rewrite a raw file because of the proprietary format. In this case, to store the metadata, it creates an XMP file with the same name as the image's file.

Hence, saying "LR won't touch the original .jpg or RAW files" is true AND false: True for the raw and false for the JPEG...

Paki, what pasco says has some merit. What kind of files are you working with? JPG?

If so, there's more than one way that keywords and metadata get embedded in JPG files. You may want to try 'exporting' a file after your keywords are updated, and see if the other applications recognize the changes after that. This is not an ideal solution because it introduces an addtional layer of JPG compression during the export. For this reason, try exporting the sample file with a format of 'Original'.
