You asked why I think it is necessary to revert to an older version. As a longtime Facebook user, I am struggling to do the most basic work with this new version. I don't know how to find my Collections or any of my other albums. Nor can I locate images I have exported. This is new territory for me, and I haven't found any guidlines on how to navigate it. Any thoughts on where such material can be found?

The only versions available to revert to are still v8.x. So reverting will not help. What version were you on before you updated to v8x?

You may find this link helpful. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/members/premium-cc/cc-ebooks/

I'd suggest starting with the free ebook. You may want a more complete paper which you can find here:

I would encourage you to upgrade to version 9.0 and please come back here with any questions

Searching is managed with the search bar at the top with the "Funnel" icon offering some specific filters

Here is an example bases on the All Photographs Collection. Anything Christmas related is found and added to the grid view .

I think it was in Version 8 that Adobe added a local folder browser which does not relate to cloud images. It is more like a folder based local storage of your images.
In Lightroom you need to choose Cloud to get to your imported images other wise you only see what is available in yout filesystem.

You will find this choice in the upper left corner. where you can open or close the left panel too.
I'lm guessing this is where you are most confused.

You mention Collections; forgive the question, but they are in Lightroom Classic; is it definitely Lightroom Desktop you usually use?

I agree with Paul. It sounds like you "upgraded" to Lightroom instead of getting the new version of Lightroom Classic. Adobe did nobody any favours with their names for their apps.

Betty's mention of both Collections and Albums in her first post can suggest that she has used both in the past. I'm trying to understand the source of her confusion and it may be that she has installed Lightroom when she should have installed Lightroom Classic.

Hopefully she can help us understand her prior history.
